Other people posting pics of your gear as if it's their own

Curious if anyone has encountered this before.

On the Gibson Facebook page today, an individual had posted a photo of their gear: a Gibson Thunderbird IV, propped up against a '67/'68 Gibson THOR bass amp. My concern is that the photo used was one that I took of my own gear and have posted previously on Talkbass and other gear forums.

When I'm surfing the internet and I find photos of cool basses, or amps, I will sometimes save them to my computer. But I never misrepresent or claim they are mine. I have on occasion posted some of these photos and said something like "I used to have a bass like this one" or " I came across an amp that looked like this one in a pawn shop", making it clear that I was using the photo for reference only. This person made no such disclosure.

I posted a very polite reply saying "Oh, that's a photo I took of my Gibson THOR etc...." spewing out the details of the amp in a positive manner. Within minutes, they had pulled the photo off Gibson's Facebook page. To "mark my territory" so to speak - I posted the photo myself and gave a brief description of the amp.

Are people really that lame that they need to try to pass off other peoples gear as their own? Like I said, I can see posting a picture you found online for reference purposes- but to claim that the rig and set up is a photo of your own gear is pretty pathetic.

People steal everything else, why not pictures of rigs belonging to others?

Whomever posted the pic probable figured that you would never see it.

Also concerning is that someone would post a picture of a rig, then claim it was stolen, producing fake documents and referring the police to a post on a website/user name that looks just like the one that was "stolen".

I'm a morbidly obese hairy sweaty guy who lounges around at home in diapers but my user name is usually "Thumper" and this is what I use as my avatar... because I can.

Bahahaha!!!!! Beat me to the joke. Yeah, on the web, we're all cool. I'm honest in everyday life, so being honest on the net comes natural. But, I can see someone stealing photos of gear and posting them to try and look cool. Especially if they're a looser in real life. Make up a cool image to convey on a forum or other networking avenue to feel worth while. Kind of lame, but for some, that's all they got.

You should feel flattered your gear is worthy enough for someone to pretend it's theirs. But like you, I couldn't help but feel a little offended. After all, you're the one that worked and saved for your gear. You should get the credit.

BTW, Birds aren't my taste, but that is a classy, sexy bass/rig set you got there. I certainly appriciate it.

Thanks - I stumbled onto that little amp and thought it made the perfect companion to the Thunderbird - after all it's a "THOR" lol Originally I figured it would just be a coffee table amp - something to look cute in my living room but it actually sounds really good through some modern speakers. The original 10's left a little to be desired.
