Overdriven acoustic/electric guitars....

what does it sound like? I can imagine it sounds good, but I'm still quite curious.

Does anyone have any soundclips or anything?

I believe that Monte Montgomery overdrives his acoustic-electric at multiple points on this video. My connection here is really slow, so I can't check to make sure though. If it's not this video, it's another of his playing Little Wing.

It sounds good, but super easy to get feedback. Thus it isn't done that often.

It causes feedback like crazy. Trust me - I'm a soundguy. However, if the electronics are good quality and you install a feedback buster in the soundhole, you can usually get good results.

I know a guy here in my town that uses both a piezo and a magnetic pickup on his acoustic guitar (Gibson IIRC), with separate outputs. The signal from the pickup goes through an overdrive pedal. He gets really awesome sounds with that combination! It sounds like there's two guitarists on stage. I haven't noticed any feedback problems at any of his gigs. I don't know exactly why, but I think part of it is because he uses only a slight overdrive. A heavier distortion would very likely cause more problems with this.

If you've listened to any live Dave Matthews Band, there's a bit of natural tube breakup on his acoustic. His tech runs a dry signal to a small Fender tube amp offstage to get just a bit of that natural grit to blend back into his other signals.

The Beatles' "I Feel Fine." That opening and the riff throughout the song are done with a Gibson J-160E through an AC-30.

I think Jesus and Mary Chain used them on some of their recordings.
