Question PA cabs, 15" vs. 10" for small room

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, wasn't quite sure where to put this, but this forum seemed to be a good place...

My home rehearsal studio is a well soundproofed, well padded 10x12 foot room. I've been using a pair of 2-way 10" PA cabs for the vocal PA, and well, they sound like 10" PA cabs... the upside is we have no feedback issues. I have a really nice old pair of Acoustic 2 -way 15" cabs with bad drivers in them sitting in my attic. I've come into a small batch of new 15" speakers and I'm considering replacing the 10" cabs in the studio with the 15" cabs.

Do any of you SR guys have any opinions on this idea? Will two 15" cabs be too much for such a small room? If there's a good chance that it'll be a problem, then it's hardly worth me dragging them down three floors, cleaning them up and swapping out drivers.

There's no reason why you wouldn't be able to use the 15s. You'll be able to run them at the same volume level as the 10s were at, so feedback shouldn't be an issue. I don't see any negatives.

Use the 15's. Size of room doesn't matter, just mix for the room.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll give it a shot. I know with a bass rig it's not a problem, I've already switched from 12's to 15's in the same room with my bass rig, but my concerns with moving that much more air around were with mics feeding back... 3 vocal mics, 2 15" cabs, a small room... just sounds like a feedback nightmare.

well, I'm off to the attic

Just control the volume as usual and feedback shouldn't be any more of an issue.

What I would do is then sell the 10" cabs and buy a 30 band eq and/or feedback destroyer.
