Howdy,

My band played a 4 hour gig last night, and i'm all beat up!

We've been gigging more lately, and have more and more two and three night-in-a-row engagements. Last week, come Sunday morning, my left shoulder was on fire, and I couldn't hold my bass on it's strap for more than 10 minutes without the fire becoming unbearable. Today, the shoulder hurts (not as bad,) and my right hand/forearm are inflamed and sore.

I'm right-handed, I don't play hard, trying to let my amp do the work, I pay attention to and try to maintain good technique. I gig mainly with a benavente vortex 5 which, while heavier than a standard jazz or precision, isn't as heavy as my previously owned stingray 5. My load in and out isn't bad, or far, i'm not a heavy drinker, I always eat healthy before gigging, but....i'm all jacked up, and worried about getting through this evening's 4 hour engagement at the pub without needing treatment come Monday; and frankly, i'd like to be able to do this 5 nights a week.

Any help, suggestions, prayers that work to alleviate my agony, and let me play effectively night after night? Will Icy Hot or Ben Gay help out any?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

What kind of strap are you using? A wide 3" or 4" strap distributes the weight of the bass better, and makes a big difference during long gigs.

It is pretty thin; I have an old, wide fuzzy strap i'll switch out before this evening, and see how that works.

Oh crap, dude! Those thin straps are like tourniquets! It's bruising your shoulder muscles, cutting into them. Go find a nice wide strap, and you'll be far better off.
