Pain in the neck (ho ho)

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm hearing conflicting opinions about the stresses put on one's hands and wrists by different neck widths and depths etc.
  • What experiences do forummers in this matter?

I've suffered from RSI in the past and want to be careful, but could do with a 5er because I often need to play Eb and Db (reading tuba parts in wind band. How rock and roll is that?).
  • Am I being really stupid thinking that pain-prone wrists can cope with 5 string necks?

Pain should not come from the neck's profile and shape. It's coming from your posture.

Some people can play a bass down on their kneecap. Some play it up under their armpit. Some float right over the belt buckle. It's time to adjust that strap and try to find a more comfortable position.

The profile of the neck string spacing, number of strings... that's all the player's preferences. But if your wrist hurts, like mine did for a while, it's about your playing posture.

Bump for the seemingly random "ho ho" comment that I couldn't make sense of..
