Hi.

And the material is...?

Generally, painting over faux leather and vinyl coverings is not advisable. If You try it, You'll soon discover why .

I'd rather re-cover the amp with a white material of Your choosing.

That said, Duratex or some other bed-liner could probably stick onto anything.

Regards
Sam

So, would it be safe to paint after applying the bed-liner?

The question is - WHAT is the surface covering of the amp NOW?

Tolex?
Carpet?
Wood with a poly finish?
Wood with an oil finish?
Other?

You cannot meaningfully ask how to paint something unless you specify what the current surface material and condition is.

I removed the tolex on my little Peavey practice amp and painted it with white urethane paint. It's probably the ugliest amp on Earth. I love it much, but I wouldn't do it on an amp that have some value.

I painted my Peavey 2X15D cabinet with tolex type covering in 1991-92 with Testors model spray paint (metal flake emerald) and it was still sticky after more than a year so I upholstered it in carpet padding and painted that metal flake black (looked killer, alarmingly like asphalt! I wish I had digital photos) I removed the padding two years ago and now its only sticky on humid days. It leaves green marks on anything it scrapes up against though.

I also bought a scarf from the ladies department at K-Mart and stapled it to the frame.

Not content I mixed fine green glitter in glue and painted on with a brush and stuck on some glow-in-the-dark Star Trek stickers.

Bottom line, if you paint your amp you may be in for a very long drying time.

Sorry, I kind of assumed that all amps were made from the same material but I'm almost certain it's tolex.

alright, if you want to paint your amp you're going to need to remove the tolex AND the residue from the adhesive used to apply the tolex. from there you can sand down and fill in any imperfections in the wood sealer (if a smooth finish is your desired outcome) then prime and paint.

word of warning: they paint WILL chip, unlike tolex (although it can be cut by repeated loading in/out) or rat fur.

i painted my ashdown 410 OD green with a white military star on the grille and white military stencils on the rear indicating cab type, impedance and power handling. the best thing about the paint i used is that it's lusterless spray paint, so i can literally just spray over any scratches it gets without even preparing the surface.

good luck if you decide to paint yours.

Since I'm a total noob:

1. How do I remove the tolex?
2. How do I remove the adhesive residue?
3. What kind of paint do I use?
4. How do I paint the grille?

In my 100% unprofessional opinion:

1. Box cutter
2. A **** load of goo gone
3. This one isn't exactly my forte, but someone else will have an idea
4. Take the screws out so you can take it off your amp and spraypaint it.

I did a white peae sign on my rumble' grille because I'm a hippie. Dad wasn't happy. But regular spraypaint worked well for it on the grille.

Try an auto paint store. The have some spray on vinyl top/dashboard paint/dye that can actually do a decent job. You will need several cans. It comes in many colors.

Cleaning the tolex before painting is very important.

Also, there are lots of truck bed liner colors available. Auto paint store will have this as well.
