Wangaratta, with no doubt. I have it on good authority that one bar there is looking to hire a hermaphroditic guitarist who is willing to learn bass, and they will pay top dollar.

Melbourne. Hands down. I don't live there visit regularly. Lots of rehearsal rooms cheaply available, a vibrant population whom still understand it's fun to go out at night and dine/see live music/etc, freindly pubs, great public transport infrastructure, oh the list goes on!
Far and away a better scene than Sydney and Brissie is still not quite big enough.

Considering Australia and New Zealand's rather stringent immigration policies, I don't think there's much chance of another unemployed musician having a high enough score for approval.

I think melbourne has the most variety - lots of pubs and clubs with original music of all kinds and covers and jazz venues...

I think Perth has a great scene too, smaller but there are some great players over there

Ok, I'd say most large cities on the east coast of Australia. The west is well, let's just say not as good (In my opinion anyway).

The east of Australia is not only more populated but is a more popular tourist destination nationally and internationally, it is sunny, mostly good weather etc etc

I wouldn't recommend Sydney though. Only if you wanted to see the sights there, not for living/music.

Brisbane or Melbourne would be my choices

Rumour has it Darwin has a thriving covers band scene with plenty of work. And it's definitely sunny. But I hope you don't mind... how shall I put this..... I hope you don't your gigs being a "little rowdy".

Is Tweed Heads technically on the gold Coast? I did a gig up there last month... actually the gig was on the NSW side of the border but our hotel was in QLD which meant were spent the whole weekend moving between two different time zones. How those poor people that live there deal with daylight saving is beyond me, but that's another thread.... Our gig finished a bit early. We had enough trouble finding a bar that was open let alone one that had a band playing. Heck we had trouble finding somewhere to buy food at 11.30pm. somehow I doubt that would be the case if there was a thriving live scene, but as always I could be wrong and would be happy to be corrected.

I still reckon Melbourne has the best live scene for both covers and originals. I'm just lucky I'm part of the furniture in Sydney cover's scene so I'm getting enough work, but it's pretty tough out there, especially so for those poor originals bands.
