Passing tones

Quick random question...

This comes up here now and then... Someone will refer to using a note that isn't a part of a scale as a passing tone to create tension, and lead into a "more appropriate" note which provides resolution. I'm refering to this idea in an essay I'm writting as a key point, and the thesauruses I'm using aren't providing whatI'm looking for in terms of synonyms which apply in this particular context.

I figured this was the best place to turn as this is a key idea in the essay and you guys know way more than I ever will. Hopefully someone has an idea what I'm rambling about and can help out with an alternative way to describe this.

Thanks.

not exactly sure what's being asked here, but that never stopped me before

dissonance to consonance
tension to resolution
non-diatonic to diatonic

dunno how you'd otherwise apply the idea to non-music contexts:

misaligned to aligned
fuzzy to clear
focussed to unfocussed
problem to solution

Exactly what I was asking, thanks... and sorry if it was unclear.

The paper is mostly about phonetics, so when a sound doesnt fit in it does soemthing similar and I can get away with using the musical version.

When in doubt go to "D" minor.
