Payment protocol for purchases in TB classifieds

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I recent purchase here on TB got me thinking about payment protocol. I am curious when TB members consider a payment to be complete. That is to ask, when do you feel that it is time to ship your sold item? When the payment hits your paypal account? when the payment gets from your paypal account to your bank account, ie when you can turn the payment into cash?

Thanks for the input. The transaction I had was not a bad one at all, but it just got me thinking about the difference between E-bay and TB, since TB has fewer, if any, official rules about these matters.

When it hits my account it is done. I try to be prepared to ship when it is complete (and use Paypal shipping.) I expect the same thing when I am the buyer. It can take another week for funds to be transferred to their bank account.

+1 to that. As soon as I see the "You've got payment" note in my email, I consider the buyer's portion of the deal closed and now it is the sellers turn to ship the item/s out within 1 day if at all possible.

Depends on the person you're dealing with. Myself, I ship as soon as I see it in my Paypal account. I recently purchased a bass from another TB'r who saw fit to wait 5 weeks after the payment had been sent and recieved. All of my other transactions were smooth as silk though. You just have to be careful who you deal with.

Same here. I use paypal because it is fast. If you wait for the funds to hit your bank account it's no longer fast. Plus, it makes little difference whether the money is in your bank or your paypal account. Paypal can snatch it back either way.

I try to ship within 24 hours or receipt of payment and I expect similar expediency from a seller. If you can't ship that quickly it's fine, but please communicate this to me.

Once it hits paypal, the money has changed hands. So it's sold.

When selling I expect and intend to ship the next work day after being payed, and sometimes ship the same day. When buying I expect the seller to ship in at least one or two days.

However, I usually inquire about shipping timeframe before paying.

It's not the buyers problem if I choose to keep his money in my paypal account, or transfer to my bank account. Either way... they've paid me.

Every once in a while I see a listing on ebay that has a disclaimer in the shipping details like "I have a job and a life, so don't contact me the next day looking for a tracking number...." I just keep on going.

When a buyer sends me money for a purchase the funds are sent to MY PayPal account and are considered in my possesion at that point, just like they would be if they were in MY bank account.

Thanks guys, very helpful so far. I think if I had to wait 5 weeks for a bass I would have a heart attack from the anxiety. "Did I just get robbed?"

No, no. It was only yesterday that I paid. I was referring to Levi76's post earlier.

Roger that. I've dealt with a few jolly jokers here on TB who've shipped stuff to me before I've even started the PayPal process. I'm PMing with "dude...I haven't even forwarded the funds yet!" Their response "yeah, whatever....I'll get it when I get it".

Never had that happen on E-bay.

Resolution

That never happens on E-bay, for sure!

Resolution in my situation was just reached. I sent a polite PM, seller explained his situation and we reached an agreement. Thanks for all the help!

when the money hits my account i ship, I have a paypal debit, so I can use it once it enters. not the purchasers fault if you don't have an account that allows you to gain access to the cash instantly. you still have the option of using the money in your account to make a purchase yourself so it is essentially in your hands

If it's a payment to my paypal via Credit Card and I get the "you have payment" email and it shows in my Paypal. I ship. If it's an e-check payment via paypal, I wait until that e-check has cleared before I ship.

If there's going to be a week's delay, might as well mail a money order.

I prefer to deal with people face to face...

So when the money is in one set of hands, and the gear is in the other, the transaction is over.

But what if they're really ugly?

I like getting my stuff via UPS, USPS, FedEx 'cuz its like Christmas only with piss-poor gift wrapping and Santa wears brown socks.
