Nirvana really sucked. One of the worst bass players I've ever heard...right up there with Duff McKagan | I never felt that PJ took advantage of Cameron's playing; especially the ease with which he seemed to "mask" a lot of odd time signatures used during his Soundgarden years. Cameron w/ PJ felt like someone driving a Ferrari in the slow lane.
Nirvana didn't do much for me. However, I think it was the timing (similar to when Punk "dethroned" large area rock acts), with Nirvana making the Motley Crue's of the world look silly and outdated, that created their legacy. Plus, and I'm sure I'll get some stones thrown for this, Cobain's death cemented him along the lines of Morrison, Hendrix, and Joplin; a tortured artist that created so much "great" stuff. If he hadn't died, what would Nirvana have been by 2000? 2002? 2004? I don't think they'd be considered as "important". Sorry for the tangent.

As far as the OP is concerned, STP. 'Purple' is one of those albums I can listen to back-to-back. 'Pretty Penny' is just beautiful. |

Pearl jam kinda went downhill for me. Ten was awesome, Vs. was pretty good, Vitalogy was okay, then i kinda lost interest in buying albums from them. I like some songs here and there of theirs, but not most of them.
STP was the same way. I really like the first 3 albums but I started liking less songs on Tiny Music, whereas I really like all of the songs on Core and Purple. I'm not sure I've really given the other albums a fair shake because of it. I think I'll rectify that today!
I saw STP on the tour for Purple. It was one of the better concerts I've been to in my life. Very memorable and very good, complete with a small acoustic set right in the middle of their show.

As far as bassists, DeLeo has it all over Ament IMHO. I cannot stand Ament's usage of fretless and DeLeo's tone is, on most STP tunes, pretty crushing and more musical.

For me, STP, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden have always had that special something. For whatever reason, Pearl Jam and Nirvana never did anything for me. | I completely agree with this.
The whole question kind of makes me wonder about music in a chicken-or-egg way: did I never give Pearl Jam much time because they never really grabbed me musically, or did they resonate with me because I didn't give them much time?
As I read this thread, I was thinking that I should really spend some more time listening to Ten and Vs., but I began to wonder if my lack of time spent listening to PJ meant that I just didn't dig them that much. |

Not enough music and too much Eddie Vedder singing off key. I really have no idea why they got so popular. Maybe it was the facination with the stories about the origin of the name and drug usage with that crowd back then that made it "all good" but whatever it is, PJ does absolutly nothing for me at all.
Matt Cameron is a great drummer.....in Soundgarden and on Geddy Lee's "My Favorite Headache".

I was more into Jane's Addiction, Fishbone, Soundgarden, RHCP, & Nirvana. Out of those two though, I guess I'd give it to PJ.

| | Registered User | | | | | I voted carrots because these were two favorite bands of mine growing up. If you ask me Core and Ten were both bands best albums respectively. Glad to see PJ still going and STP are back. I enjoy both bands new stuff, but of course I remember that most bands as their members age so does their music in how it sounds and adapts, but still maintains their signature sound. |

| | | | I am not sure if I could pick one. I think Pearl Jam's best is better than STP's best, but I think STP has more songs I would listen to on repeat. Like, if I did a top 10 of these 2, the first two songs would be Alive and Breath. But most of the top 10 would probably be STP songs. YMMV |

Now if you were to put them up against AIC or SG I'd have to put a bit more thought into it |

| | | | My personal preference is STP, by a longshot. Deleo is a phenomenal bass player, and some of his lines are so silky smooth and melodic, that I can't even compare him to Ament. Granted, PJ is a great band too. But, I gotta hand this one to Deleo and friends.... |

How close am I ? | Ha! Believe it or not I think my list would be the same as your first one (AIC > STP > SG > PJ). I love SG, but there has always been something about them that has hindered me from obsessing with them in the same manner I've obsessed over AIC and STP in the past. That said, I almost always have either Badmotorfinger or Superunknown in my car
The other thing I'll add is that SG, in my opinion, is the only band out of all the Grunge groups that got better over time (sans AIC). STP started falling off after Tiny Music, and Pearl Jam never interested me after Ten. Nirvana is a bit of a wild card, but I'm not sure they could have kept up over time had Kurt lived on. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
