Peavey Guitar Gurus?

Sign in to disble this ad
I buy and sell bass guitars and I've come to find out how underrated and awesome these old USA Peavey bass guitars are. Our lead guitar player in our praise band is out of work and I wanted to bless him with a second used guitar since we are gigging twice a week now. I am looking hard at an old Peavey Nitro. This is an old USA made Peavey and I was wondering if the old USA Peavey guitars were on par with the basses as far as quality? Anyone?

I always thought the Predator was a nice instrument for what they cost in the mid 90's. They were super cheap, maple necks, they had the cool Peavey tilt screw neck adjuster, sounded good, played well. They were a bit heavy IIRC. That's the only one I know anything about. You can often get them for peanuts nowadays.

Peavey guitars are about as good as any others in fit, function and finish if you take product level into consideration. The problems with used ones is that most have been abused. I would be surprised if a used one couldn't be made into a real player with a little TLC and a good set up.

I was working for a dealer when that was a current model and they are really quite good - better than the Fender & Ibanez guitars of the day and close to par with the pre MCI Charvels and pre import Kramers. Be sure to check the bridge and the truss rod as those are the points that get abused the most.

It's still a lot cheaper than buying Fender Roadworns. And the quality is almost the same.

Update: Thanks for all the input. I ended up getting my friend a Nitro II in great shape. He is blown away by it as he states it has the Strat sound.
