People who think the band Lynyrd Skynyrd is a person....

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, technically "Leonard Skinner" was a person, but it really chaps me when I hear someone (especially a grown adult) refer to Lynyrd Skynyrd as a person...

i.e.
me- do you listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd?
tool- yeah, I like his music.

I can sort of understand how a fool would mistake the band for a person, seeing as though "Lynyrd Skynyrd" could possibly be someone's nam... although *** spells their name "Lynyrd"?? Anyhow...

I notice people refer to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as a person too. HOW THE HELL CAN YOU THINK LED ZEP is a person! Or Pink Floyd for that matter!

Vent over...

Jethro Tull actually was a person......

But he lived a couple of hundred years before the band of the same name. IIRC he invented one of the variations on the mouldboard plow

Are they really referring to those bands as a person, or are they simply referring to them as a singular entity, making for potentially awkward sounding grammar?

I.e., which is more correct grammatically?

- "The Rolling Stones are terrible!"
- "The Rolling Stones is terrible!"

Think about it carefully. Are you sure?

Because whatever answer you gave should also be just as correct for Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd (or Lynyrd Skynyrd). And it has nothing to do with thinking those are people's names.

I thought Leonard Skinner was a gym teacher or something when some of the members were at high-school....

Oh, and by the way, which one's 'Pink'?

I remember in 11th grade, when we studied the industrial revolution... ya know, Eli Whitney and the cotton gin. Well, you should have seen how excited I was when I learned that JETHRO TULL invinted the seed drill. I dont think any of the other duds in my class even knew who the band was. Sad.

Ah, that was it. The best I could do off the top of my head was 'agricultural implement' and I made the unwarranted jump to plow

I stand corrected

Creedence Clearwater spoke at a class I was attending.

Also, Mr. Jefferson Airplane had his own television show (I heard).

actually, the band doesn't even have to have a name that could be mistaken for that of a person. I've heard people say things like "oh yeah, I like Nirvana, his lyrics are really good" many times. Many people are just so musically illiterate that the only person in a band that actually matters is the guy who sings the words, the rest of the band are just people who facilitate the vocalist in many people's minds.
