Percussion Instrument ID Help

I'm a big fan of the simple percussion instruments. The cabasa is really cool sounding when used right in a song, but there's another one that I love the sound of as well. I have no idea of it's name and wanted to know if I could get some help.

It's used throughout this song, Clinton Fearon - Who Cares. Awesome song in every way to me, but what grabs me, even more than the drum and da bass lines are the almost animal-like sounds that keep appearing haha.

I've seen them, it's a drum almost, that you hold and you like wipe something on the inside and get that noise.

Anyone know the name of this thing?

I think what you're talking about is either a snare played side stick or a wood block

No, the first guy got it right, he was talking about the cuica. Super fun instrument to play, too!

Cuica!

When I first heard that sound decades ago on Paul Simon's "Me and Julio...", I callled it the "monkey can" and have been calling it that ever since.

I am a fan of the djembe myself, and also love the rainstick, which I use as sort of a giant rattle. Playing hand drums and percussion is quite......habit forming.
