Thumbs up Picks Couldn't Be Any Better - V-Picks: My Review

Sign in to disble this ad
This is my review of the V-Picks "Freakishly Large" Picks.

www.v-picks.com

First Off: These picks are HUGE. Very, very comfortable in your hand. I've played with them for hours at a time with no pain or irritation. A problem I have with all other picks I have tried.

Sound: This model of V-Pick is 2.75mm thick!(He has versions from 1.0mm all the way up to 8.66mm!!!) And are made of acrylic from what I can tell. I wanted to make sound clips comparing these to my former pick of choice, the Dunlop Gator 2.0mm, however my computer is being difficult...

I will say that you will hear a difference! My notes seem clearer, louder and more pronounced. I don't have to use as much force as I used to, to get a really angry/aggressive tone. This may not be for everyone, but when I use a pick, that's what I tend to go for. You want mellow? Use your fingers!

Durability: Been switching between two, but neither have shown any wear in the week and a half or so I've been using them. I'm sure they can very well last a lifetime (chances are you'll lose it WAAAAYYY before it is worn to the point of being unusable).

Price: I guess a turn off to some would be the price. These picks are by no means in the "12 for $4" range that almost all picks are in. The one's I have are $4 each, and there are models that are $20 each. However, Vinnie hand makes EVERY one and it takes him about 20 or so minutes to do so. I believe what he's asking is mroe than fair.

Customer Service: I seriously DOUBT you will talk to a nicer guy than Vinnie. He's quick with emails and very, very friendly. He's also a member here on Talkbass. Great guy and he'll definitely see my business in the future.

Final thoughts: The best pick I have ever used, and I've tried out a ton. Certainly give me the sound I want and have been wanting, to be totally honest. Vinnie is a fellow musician and a really nice guy who you can tell care about his product and the satisfaction of his customers. Something I think is very important.

V-pick's website says his are cheaper than most boutique picks... and I didn't know there was such a thing as a boutique pick. I must try to find these other handmade pick companies.

Here's one that is 8.66 mm thick: Crazy!

Vinnie is a great guy and a hell of a guitarist. I met him years a go while sharing a bill with him. I don't use picks but they looked really cool.

Just bumpin this up. I don't have any type of deal with vinnie going. I just think he makes a good product and more pic kplaying bassists should use em, or at least try em!

Yeah. There's another V-Pick thread in technique as well, and one of the guys put up a sound clip comparing the Dunlop Gator and the Big Fattie. To me the Big Fattie sounds a little more finger-like than the Dunlop, less clacky.

I've also got a Fattie, a Freakishly Large, and the Fab Four, which includes another Freakishly Large. They take a little getting used to, but I do like the tone out of them, the shape, and so far they've helped me relax my grip more since I normally like picks under 1mm. I also like the rounded tips and overall symmetrical shape. I haven't decided on which of them I like the most for bass, but I've also been testing them with acoustic guitar as well.
