Can anyone say what type of picks are nice on a fretless to get a nice attack that has some punch and fat sound?

Something thick is nice.

If you are going for a strong attack and thick sound it would seem that a standard heavy pick would work. I have found that heavy picks generate a really strong sound where lighter ones tend to 'give' under the initial attack and lesson the amount of strength of the note generated. You get a more 1 to 1 ratio between the force you put into the stroke to the amount the string reacts with a heavy pick. Lighter picks put a bit of a reduction in that ratio due to the amount they flex.

You know, pick stuff. Plastic?

I think the material is less important than the shape of the pick. A lot of thick picks, in addition to being stiff, have a more rounded edge, which I think fattens up the sound a lot.

Try Dunlop's Big Stubbies for starters. My only gripe about them is that they wear out quickly on me, but that's the price you pay for getting the sound you want out of them, fat, warm, punchy, etc. I don't prefer them these days to my current choice of pick, but many people love them.
