my mini 'review' or rant -
I knew I would regret buying it but I had to check it out. Was anybody else thoroughly Underwhelmed? Guy Pratt is a good bass player - can't argue there (he even snuck in a few slaps and pops) but it just seemed like they were going through the motions -even in '94. IMO the band has absolutely no energy and no...Balls without Waters. Somebody needs to tell Gilmour that he can't 'scat'. Who was that 'other' guitarist anyway? Andy Fairweatherlow or Snowy White would have ripped him to shreds. The Billy Corgan/Hall of Fame thing was umm, interesting? I wanted to like it but I just couldn't :/ The visuals were cool - I have to give them that (probably Storm Thorgerson's twisted vision) but it looked like a Kiss show at times with some of the lighting and pyro stuff I think they slapped it together just so Gilmour can try to sell more of his new album? Think I'll give it away to somebody who's more into the Division Bell era...

I enjoy it because I'm a big fan of Guy and they played Dark Side Of The Moon in it's entirety. |

Turned out all the lights, put it on the big screen and cranked up the surround sound. At times I was enthralled by the light show and at other times I just laid back, closed my eyes and drifted with the music.
I saw that tour - front-row-center in Atlanta. They played through a torrential downpour. Loved it.
But then, I usually prefer the Gilmour stuff.

I've got both PULSE and Delicate Sound Of Thunder on LaserDisc. The earlier concert Delicate Sound Of Thunder is not as good technically as for video/audio quality, but the performances are far superior. Much more enjoyable concert video and a much better record of the post-Waters "Pink Floyd™" Live experience.
Roger Waters' DVD In the Flesh (Live) is much better than PULSE, just a bit better than "Delicate Sound".

I agree that it was an "underwhelming" performance, surpassed by the one on Delicate Sound of Thunder. As a Floyd fan I still enjoyed it.
As for In the Flesh, Waters' DVD, it is a good show as well.
In summary, a band of unknowns performs some good versions of Pink Floyd songs. Also some of Waters' own stuff which I did not bother to watch. The performance of Dogs is particularly good, IMO.
Waters plays bass on some tracks, acoustic guitar on some, and sings on some. His bass playing is unremarkable at times, just the minimum required to get by. Ditto for the guitar, which should have been left to a guitarist.
When he sings tracks that were originally sung by Gilmour, it sounds...uh...not so good. One of the other band members nails Gilmour's voice perfectly, though.
On at least one of the tracks, he mimes playing the bass, so then I wonder if he actually played or sang on any of it.
With the exception of the moments in the music where the sound of his voice is a critical feature, he really contributes little to the overall show, unfortunately.
Still it's a good show, and the band, whoever they are, does a great job. I believe one of the same musicians plays on Pulse and In the Flesh. |

You could say similar about the Floyd after Syd left.

I imagine a name recognition contest between David Gilmour and...who was that guy again?
So compared to the main players in the thread, David Gilmour and Roger Waters, who headed up one of the most legendary rock bands ever, yeah, he is an unknown. right back at you. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
