Looking for some venues to play in San Diego. The plan would be to play during Comic Con, somewhere close to the convention center. Any suggestions? Can't be too small, we have a large drumset and keyboards. Melodic metal, female singer.

Try the Stage Bar and Grill at 5th and F. You can probably get a gig on Monday night from 8 to 10, opening for the reggae band, Reggae Party.

You haven't picked up a new gig, have you?

Downtown San Diego (where ComicCon is hosted) has a much higher ratio of dance music venues than rock clubs. Of the rock clubs there, most are going to favor national touring acts (House of Blues, 4th and B). I haven't played The Stage, but have known local acts who've performed there.

I don't know how we got our first gig there, but they liked us (classic rock - mostly '70s), and asked us back the next week. We said no, but went back the week after that, and we drew a pretty good crowd off the street.

We call it "The Sticky Stage" because they covered the stage with leopard fur, and all the spilled drinks have never been cleaned up. So advice: don't touch the stage, and bring something to set your gear on. Be prepared to shoo off the swarm of fruit flys from the stage area, too.

A regae show doesn't really sound like our kind of crowd. We would need to be in a venue that embraces metal/hard prog.

LOL. When we played there the first time, the only people left in the place when we were done were a TBer in from Canada (Sheldon), his brother Doc, and me. Reggae isn't the draw. They want a band that will draw a crowd in hopes that some will stick around for a little reggae (the band is actually good).

Can people dance to your music?

It's melodic metal with a female singer, keys and such. Think Evanescence meets Dream Theater with a little bit more darkness. Not much dancing, but atmospheric enough to intrigue the geeky sci-fi crowd I would hope. There are 3 girls in the band, which should help entertain a mixed audience.

I was trying to imply that you were were hyping your new reggae band.

Well, that close to the convention center during that period of time may be tough. A good venue for your type of music is Brick by Brick Brick by Brick - San Diego's Number One Club , and it's up the freeway about 15 minutes from downtown.. at the most. There are some clubs in the North Park area of San Diego that may be up your alley. I play mostly beach area venues (710 Club, Winston's, Gallaghers, etc) and they are between 20 and 30 min from downtown, but you get good crowds usually.

Brick by Brick is probably a better venue for the music you're playing than the beach areas. It is more likely to have shows themed towards metal and harder rock than the beach venues, who often tend to swing more towards reggae and jam oriented material.

True. I played there in the late '70s when it was Jerry Herrera's Spirit. Out of the garage and into Spirit, as we used to say.

So wait...they had electricity back then or you used an upright under candlelight?

Ruby Room (which Justin just came to watch us play at last week) also has some themed heavier nights and is close (Hillcrest area). Good sound in there.
