"Spanish fan calls police over saxophone band who were just not jazzy enough"

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009...ochs-saxophone

Sorry if this is a repost. Just heard about this from a friend who plays with this group.

This is freakin hilarious. Well unless you're the band it happened to, I guess.

That is by far the funniest thing I've heard in a long time... if it is a repost, it should be reposted over and over again... wow!

Too funny!

"According to a report in El País newspaper yesterday, the khaki-clad police officers listened to the saxophone-playing and drumming coming from the festival stage before agreeing that the purist might, indeed, have a case."

This should almost be doubled-up on the Gig Humor thread to maximize exposure.

That's hilarious alright.

Still, it just goes to show how polarised people's views are of "jazz". A certain Louis Armstrong (to his eternal regret ) once passed a remark to the effect of "that's not jazz", when he first heard Charlie Parker's music. It seems to be a global phenomenon.

"The jazz purist claimed his doctor had warned it was 'psychologically inadvisable' for him to listen to anything that could be mistaken for mere contemporary music."

This really does read like an Onion article.

It's just gotten better! Wynton Marsalis (pompous self-designated arbiter of what is jazz) has chimed in: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009...azz-purist-fan

I don't know if that's real, but this is blowing my mind.

I don't doubt it at all. He may be famous and have better chops than me, but at least I have an open mind.

I just love how the purists think fusion is the epitome of modern music. I doubt any 12-19 year old MTV viewers are turning on fusion. Jazz is jazz, stop splitting hairs.

To be fair, we haven't heard the band in question. It might be nasty elevator music/Weather Channel local forecast background music.

Did I sleep through an era?

To the best of my knowledge, purists have never thought of fusion as the epitome of modern music; jazz purists have unanimously derided fusion since it first appeared. For that matter, even fusion fans only thought it was the epitome of modern music for about 15 seconds in late 1973.

I have. Live at Yoshi's. It is not even close to elevator music.
