What is your goto bassline when trying to impress a lady or just a causal observer? I break into Rush's Tom Sawyer for that quick "That's cool" thing. What are some better ones for me to practice?

I usually just say "I'm really not very good". That usually has them walking off so I can have time for a pee and beer before the next set.

I play the progression from With or Without You and ask them to guess the song.

I'm a cynic.

I'm also kidding. I usually don't try to impress people, but I mostly play at church and ... yea.

Come Together by the Beatles?

I agree with the other replies. Unless you can improve a mean slap solo, bass is usually kind of bland by itself.

With or Without You is also an excellent solution.

A number of jazz ballads are eminently playable on bass, and familiar to most people.

Hysteria's a pretty cool one to play or Roundabout, Blood Brothers, or Can't Stop depending on what you're going for...

Black Dog or Heartbreaker, what is and what should never be, ramble on, Misty (jazz), Pretty Woman, birthday (Beatles) are a few that come to mind. Ozzie's Iron Man

The Wind Cries Mary sounds sweet and is easily recognizable. Or Victim of Changes from Judas Priest.

Boris the Spider, tap-plucked like Entwhistle with lots of top end.

Either the second half of Anesthesia(Pulling Teeth) or some old school Maiden, just something quick and lively that they may know, but most of the time I still get the glaze effect. Actually I get my best results from playing Fur Elise, everyone knows that.

Since when do casual observers and ladies go up to the Bass Player, unless he's also the lead singer? I said it before here on TB. We don't get no repect! LOL
