Playing a bass through a laptop?

Sign in to disble this ad
I think this is the closest forum to ask what I'm wanting to know, but if a moderator knows a better spot, I'd appreciate this topic being moved.

Anyway, I've read a few posts today that some people play and practice their bass through their computer. My question is, what kind of setup would I need to accomplish this? My Macbook in my bedroom has a nice Bose setup, and I think it would be nice if I could put another bass in my bedroom and just play or practice if it tickled my fancy while I'm bed. Thanks in advance.

The recording gear forum has some good information about interfaces, and this thread has some good stuff as well (although it is focused on using a computer for effects):

Personally, I use the Presonus Firebox, and I like it a lot.

Youd need an interface, maybe only 1 channel if thats all your gonna do with it. Youd need some sort of amp program, ampeg svx, guitar rig 2 or 3, amplitube. Lastly, Youll need something to hear it back with, monitors or headphones. I practice my bass through my recording rig all the time. I do have a big ampeg stack sitting next to me in the studio, but the programs have alot more diversity, especially if im trying to nail a specific tone. PM me if you need any more info cuz i do this exact thing at home.
