Playing Horn pieces on a fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,
A few days ago, my friend lended me his Warwick Corvette Standard fretless bass, and i started experimenting with it as it was my first time using a fretless.. i discovered that the notes played on the bass, especially the higher end ones sounded like it was played from a horn/brass instrument.. i was wondering if anyone tried playing lets say a trumpet parts on a fretless. or even accompany a horn quartet or group.

Think about it :P

Hmm prolly play other instruments with a 6 string or (12 string doubled fretless if they exist). Would be pretty cool to try one.

Also maybe play like flute stuff almost with harmonics both natural and artifical.. well not really flute stuff, maybe play in a fill or something..

A few years back I recorded a project with a friend where he wanted me to have one 'normal' bass track fairly forward in the mix, and sort of a 'bass orchestra' way in the back.

What I didn't know was that the channel I was using on the preamp to run all these many bass tracks into the recording was dying. While the preamp channel went bad...it sounded GREAT! So I had eight or nine tracks of fretless bass waaaay in the background, doing various intervals around the main part. My friend comes in from a break to check on the progress and goes nuts, saying things like "Dude. Where are the other instruments you used on this? I hear cellos and a trombone. And I can't even tell what this one is."

He didn't believe me when I said it was all my fretless Jazz. I was running into an ADA preamp with a chorus and octaver in the loop, but wasn't using much of either of them.

But I really wish I could replicate that dying preamp. Having something that could color a fretless that much in a predictable manner would be amazing.
