Playing for the song

I was browsing YouTube listening to some Ivan Lins, and came across this from the Harlequin album. Here you have one of the best bassists in the world doing just what the song needs and no more. Nothing fancy at all, except that groove deeper than the Grand Canyon.

Flippin' gorgeous, and I am no smooth jazz fan. That is a clinic in restraint and taste.

Witness the power of one note at a time, endlessly placed in just the right spot.

That whole DVD is fantastic- Ivan has a great voice. AJ is one of my very favorite bassists- he looks like he's having convulsions in a lot of parts of it

Also, AJ's version of "playing for the song" is often way fancy compared to a lot of people's definition. He just has such great timing and note choice that he often fits in "fancy" parts so well that they fit in with the song perfectly.

+1
Jackson is one of the most tasteful bassists I've ever heard

Superb! AJ blows me away every time I hear him. I love his playing with Michel Camilo too.
