I wonder how it'll go--to me, polka is one of those kinds of music like the blues where the progressions and most of the riffs are all the same, but the lyrics are different. If I were the judge I would tell the guy he was rolling out the barrel a little too often...

Ok, not that I'm a polka king or anything, but in my band we play the occassional polka for the crowds. I think to play a polka lame is quite easy. But if you really want to play polka correctly with all the nuances, some of the songs can get quite in depth.

Give a listen to some of Frankie Yankovic's stuff. One of his songs modulates about 6 times in the songs and is not a "simple" as you may think it is. The fact is with some of the polka greats, they make some fairly complex compositions sound simple.

IMHO

To most, once the accordian gets going, all polkas sound almost identical. My fiance and I occassionally put on the "Big Joe Polka Show" and giggle our butts off. But yes, you can tell that polkas are different, but after a while they all blend...

I fortunate enough to live in the same town as the worlds greatest polka band. Brave Combo.

I kid. I am smack in the middle of polka heaven here surrounded by Swiss, Norwegians,Germans Swedes and Poles. I actually get to see the real thing and I'm reminded not to take it for granted. We get the big bands from across the pond playing at little taverns and supper clubs around me.
So no slight intended, that was sorta tongue and cheek. I just find it funny because so many polkas are really the same song with different words. And it's the guys ex wife shackin up with the perp! There's a good song in there somewhere!

I was flipping channels and caught that one time. I was absolutely amazed that such a scene exists!

My last name ends in "ski" and I used to play accordion and still do at times. I'm quite familiar with polkas.
