Pop-punk suggestions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I finally got my Green Day tribute band up and running. We're still in the early formative stage, but we get along personality and goal-wise very well, and I'm ready to make this happen.

We have decided that we're going to primarily focus on a one-hour set of Green Day tunes from across the spectrum. No slow, ballad type songs, just the more recognizable and upbeat stuff.

We'll gig with local original bands, hopefully open for touring acts, that sort of thing, on the strength of that one-hour set. However, we talked and decided that we should put together a couple of sets worth of similar music - so that we can book bars and whatnot on our own as well. We think that there's a market here (Navy and college area) for high-energy, upbeat pop-punk, we all enjoy playing it, so that part is a no-brainer.

So, my question is, can anyone suggest popular pop-punk tunes that would fit in the mold? Here's what we've got going right now:
Quote:
Green Day -
Longview
Welcome to Paradise
Basket Case
She
Sassafrass Roots
When I Come Around
Coming Clean
In The End

Geek Stink Breath
No Pride
Stuart and the Ave
Brain Stew/Jaded
Westbound Sign

Nice Guys Finish Last
The Grouch
All The Time
Uptight

Castaway
Minority

American Idiot
Jesus of Suburbia
Holiday
St. Jimmy
She's A Rebel

Know Your Enemy

Blink 182 -
Online Songs
What's My Age Again?
All The Small Things
Dammit
Aliens Exist (Dumpweed)

The Offspring -
No Brakes
Want You Bad
One Fine Day
Come Out and Play

Say Anything -
The Last Great Punk Rock Song
Alive With The Glory of Love
Every Man Has A Molly

Foo Fighters -
My Hero (maybe)
All My Life
Monkey Wrench

Boys Like Girls -
The Great Escape
Hero/Heroine

OK GO -
Here It Goes Again

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes -
Over the Rainbow
Rainbow Connection
Rocket Man
Sweet Caroline
Uptown Girl

Jimmy Eat World
The Middle

Eve 6
Inside Out

Good Charlotte
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

The All-American Rejects -
Dirty Little Secret
Move Along

Bowling For Soup -
Punk Rock 101
1985
Summer of '69
Girl All the Bad Guys Want

Dramarama -
Anything, Anything

Fall Out Boy -
Dance, Dance

Sum 41 -
Fat Lip
Still Waiting

Simple Plan -
Shut Up

The Killers -
Mr. Brightside
Jenny was a Friend of Mine

The Ramones -
Blitzkrieg Bop

Krokus -
Ballroom Blitz

Cheap Trick -
I Want You To Want Me
This is a pretty solid list - though we haven't started cutting songs yet, we probably will, so other ideas would help. Also, we're not doing anything -"core" or "real punk". Pop-punk, high energy positive "drink a bunch, bounce around, in general good mood" music - no Rage or Sex Pistols or Black Flag here.

So what else is going over well? I'm afraid that (aside from Green Day) I'm pretty horribly limited to this style of music - I don't really enjoy listening to it. Playing it is another matter, fortunately, but I don't know enough to find others. Normally I wouldn't post a full set list, but honestly I don't think anyone else is going to take this idea and run with it locally, so...

Thoughts?

Everything on Dookie is amazing, even the acoustic bonus track at the end lol. The Descendents were sort-of pop punk I guess, what about them?

Also (this is sort kooky but, bear with me) "Just A Girl" by No Doubt. Bowling For Soup also another good pop punk band did this live once. If you have no shame like Jared then you can pull it off but, check your pride at the door because there's only 2 ways it's gonna go and one of them's good.

We sort of talked about this, but it's going to depend on singing while playing ability - none of us have any pride (onstage, at least where this project is concerned).

Bowling for Soup, among others, are quite adept at taking a run-of-the-mill pop/rock cover and giving it a pop-punk feel. Why not give that a try? Throw in a Bon Jovi tune or what have you.

The band I'm working with now does pop-punk versions of "House at Pooh Corner" (Loggins & Messina) and "Handy Man" (James Taylor).

Edit: Whoops, just noticed XtheDP's post. +1!

What does this mean: Aliens Exist (Dumpweed)
Sorry, big blink fan haha.

What about Taking Back Sunday, some early stuff off of Tell All Your Friends? Or a bigger hit like MakeDamnSure?

You're missing mxpx (basically anything off slowly going the way of the buffalo and life in general). You could also add some lagwagon, millencolin and NOFX in there.

"Bikeage" off the first Descendents album is a great song. It's got some cool bass parts in it too.

Maybe some NOFX, like "The Longest Line" or "Please Play this Song on the Radio"?

Husker Du had plenty of catchy songs later on in their career, like "Makes No Sense at All" or "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely" (which Green Day also covered).

How about "Suspect Device" by Stiff Little Fingers?

Sweet, new stuff to look up. :-) Can't believe even I didn't think of the Descendents or NOFX, mxpx. Not a punk fan, but those bands are all legends.

"Aliens Exist" is what Winamp auto-tag calls the 1st song on Enema of the State. It calls track three (which is what the jewel case back calls Aliens Exist) "Aliens Exist Pt II." Not being a fan, I didn't know which was right, so I listed it as both.

One of our constraints is that we're going to play familiar, pop-radio tunes, keep the crowd going with songs they can sing along with. We've already cut some from the list above because they just weren't that popular - granted it may be difficult to find that many songs, but even somewhat less-popular is still better than an obscure Say Anything or Boys Like Girls tune.

Of course that's not a 100% rule, but for the most part we're trying to stick to it.
