The Cars ready to drive off again?
July 27, 2010, 10:07 AM EST
WENN
Rock supergroup The Cars are teasing fans about a possible reunion by posting a photo of the bandmates working together in the studio on their Facebook fan page.
The "My Best Friend's Girl" hitmakers split 22 years ago, three years after enjoying a massive global hit with Live Aid theme "Drive."
Bandmates Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes reteamed for a mini-Cars reunion in 2005, but failed to convince front man Ric Ocasek and David Robinson to join them. Instead, they hit the road as The New Cars with Utopia stars Todd Rundgren, Prairie Prince and Kasim Sulton.
The new photo features Ocasek and Robinson and an accompanying caption reads: "Anyone in the mood for a reunion by The Cars?"
The fifth member of the band, bassist/vocalist Benjamin Orr, died of pancreatic cancer |

Assuming Kasim Sulton is not on board, who do you think would be an appropriate substitute for the late Mr. Orr?
I'm trying to come up with someone who could cover Ben's vocal duties as well as his bass playing... maybe even lend a songwriting assist in the event that they decide to record some new material. Extra points if the new bassist has roots in same era as the Cars.
Any ideas? |

Any ideas? | Richard Page from Mr. Mister on vocals and bass guitar. He is currently on tour with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band and pretty much would fit the bill on all aspects. |

Yup...saw them back in the day. Elliott would move around a little bit but they pretty much just stood there and played the tunes. They sounded great but it was like sitting in your room listening to the record player.

I was actually thinking Sting would fit the bill as far as the three prime requisites... singing, bass, songwriting. Even the minor point of being contemporary to the Cars. But there are obvious problems with Sting.
Page, OTOH, is spot on! Perhaps a tad younger than the rest of the guys, but not enough to matter. He'd be an excellent fit! |

Although I'm a fan of the Cars, I can't see anyone replacing Benjamin Orr. I really like Richard Page idea, but IMO it wouldn't be the same. Much like Paul Rogers touring with Queen. |

Replacing Ben Orr would be tough. If they record new material, hopefully Roy Thomas Baker can handle production.

<flame-off> | I think it depends on WHICH 80's bands. True, there were many bad mainstream bands, but I personally think the Cars had a unique sound and were great. Also, there was some juicey funk that came out in the early 80's (and we bass players gotta get the groove on!).
During this time, there was awesome stuff coming out of the UK (e.g. "The Smiths"). Most of my favorite bands are really from the late 70's/early 80's, and I like many bands from that time--too many to name! I also feel that the "college radio" and "goth" scene was at its best during this time.
Forgive me, but I continue to mainly listen to the old stuff and be inspired by it, including the synthy cheeeeez!
Cheers!

Reason: substituted e.g. for the wrong term. I like to be gramatically correct (otherwise, I might get flamed for it!)

I'm 32, my older brothers had 2 vinyl records of the cars, I listened to them over and over as a little kid. great songs.
the problem with the 80's IMO was the way some bands abused of the 80's technology. some recordings now sound really dated, even though they might be great songs. I don't think this is the case with the cars though, i can still listen to their songs and they still move me.
how about Gene loves Jezebel? was theri bass player any good? they'll be playing in buenos aires next week.

I can't call them perfect, because the lyrics were too often utterly nonsensical. I lost my taste for them as they became more "'80s" in style.
