Possibly Dodgy Deal?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently purchased a HollowBody Tele from Guitar Fetish, after a friend of mine told me about the site.

I saw the guitar, and then I saw the prIce and I had to buy it.

But today (I ordered it on Staurday Afternoon Australian Time) I got an email claiming that the American Express cards billing address was wrong, the one that I typed in.

But here's the dodgy part

"In addition, our Credit Processing Company has instructed us to obtain a clear, readable copy of both the back and front of the AmEx Credit Card used on this order and government issued ID, license, or passport in order to confirm ID."

Is it just me or does that seem to be just a little bit on the dodgy side, my Dad (The owner of the credit card), Is a bit sceptical of purchasing things off the internet, but because of this he thinks it is a scam, adding this

"Also, your 3/4 digit CVV code from the back of your card was not entered / entered incorrectly, please include this code."

Mentioning a code that is actually on the front of the card.

I'm just not sure whether this is real or not any more. I read good reports about the site but this has got me a little worried

Sorry for such a long post, I just want to know why this happened.

Did you try contacting the guys that run the site?

Get the address from their website and Send them an email, they are very responsive, just to make sure what's going on. If they're being spoofed they need to know it, and if they are not, you'll get your answers.

We have emailed them back, but the time difference makes it difficult for us to get an answer when we need it, it's around 13 hours, so by the time they get up we'll be in bed.

I'd suggest hanging tight until you hear from them. If the email requesting information is time sensitive, odds are its not legit.

FWIW, my card's CCV is on the back.

Yeah it changes, on Visa cards it's on the back, American Express cards it's on the front.

From my experience anyway

What was the outcome so we all know in future (I saw a similar thread to this a while ago) - Had the site been "spoofed" was it a dodgy deal/dodgy site or was the request for info genuine or an attempted identity theft?.

Just saw something similar on British TV where somebody got scammed thinking they were reting apartments in London and then this guy's passport was used to fool others - I'm genuine, here's a copy of MY passport !! HELP!!

In the end we canceled the deal. It's a large case of Internet paranoia really.
In any case the best plan is to be careful in the net, but both my dad, and Dave from guitar fetish were weary of the deal, they both thought they were being scammed by each other I think, but nothing bad came out of it in the end. I just had to spend a little bit extra buying it from a store, and to be honest I think
I got a better guitar
