I'm in the process of setting up a music room in my basement. I'd love some feedback about what kinds of equipment to include to make it jam-friendly. I have no prior experience setting up a room, or jamming with other people for that matter -- just a desire to get started. The (finished/carpeted/drop ceiling) room is rectangular, with about 230 sq. ft. of space to work with. My GK bass rig is loud enough to shake the house of the foundation (way overkill for the space). We'll be adding a drum kit soon for my daughter who just started drumming this year. I'm looking into an mid-level kit like Tama Rockstar or Pacific FS -- something that she can grow with as well as a kit that more experienced visitors can get by with.
What other types of gear would be good to have around? Are a mixer and PA necessary? How many mics? I'm pretty clueless here -- I'd sure like to see a laundry list of essentials. Added bonus if anyone can talk about he $$ involved, assuming I can find deals on CL. And what about optimizing the room acoustics. I understand that soundproofing is pretty impossible/impractical in my case, but what can I add (DIY bass traps, gobos, etc.) to improve the acoustics? |

Guitar -> Cord -> Amp
Drumsticks -> Drums
Mic -> Stand -> Cord -> PA -> PA Speakers
Some sort of stand to put words on until you memorize them
Mic -> Recording device

this is a video our singer took of our space while we working on a new instrumental tune. sorry the sound is a little off. somebody has been coming in and painting the hallways of the space with an Alice in Wonderland theme. kinda cool. our room is a little small, but we make it work. ENJOY
we hit the recording studio tomorrow!

This is the storage unit we were setting up in, till our other guitarist decided that he no longer wanted to play electric any more. He's finishing up his classical degree, and we can't understand why, but he's kinda wishy washy so whatever.
This is 3 bands' setups in a bigger RV unit. Right now I think there's 5 half stacks in here, my 8X10 in the back left corner (which I need to grab and get home since I won't be jamming here any more), 3 drum kits, I think 3 combo amps for the 3rd band that's really just some guys that dick off together.....
Sucks we're not playing here any more. It was nice having the space.
I'm messing with another project tho, where the drummer has his own shed that's got AC and a full PA in it. And it's fully insulated with sound dampening material. |
