Not sure if this is the right place, but....
I play in a blues trio and summer means festivals! So, tell me about your festival gigs, maybe some pics or links if u got 'em. I'll go first.
We're playing the Mountain of Blues festival next weekend in Ruidoso, NM, opening for Coco Montoya. http://www.ruidoso.net/bluesfestival/
Also the Keystone Blues and Arts Fest, July 13th, and the Telluride Blues & Brews fest September 13th, http://www.tellurideblues.com/
I know there's a few more, but I don't have access to the schedule right now, I'm just the bass player y'know. |

This is a great festival right on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, WI. http://www.riverfestlacrosse.com/eve...m=1&dateLink=2
We're the one's playing from 9:00 to 12:00....Phoenix (rising from the ashes again...).
Or if you're not doing anything the night before, we're playing at John's Bar here in La Crosse on 7/1. It's kind of our warm up to Riverfest.

Originally Posted by Blueszilla I know lots of you guys have these kinds of gigs, so come on and share, encourage us all! | Just did my first one of the season on Sunday: White Salmon Springfest. The sound guy has been doing this one for decades and is always cool to work with. That's a huge bonus on a festival gig, no?
In August we have this one: Maryhill Arts Festival. What a setting! This is our fourth straight year playing there, and it's always been very well attended. The juried art selection is unreal out there too.
September, walking distance from my house: Bingen Huckleberry Festival. No...mo...pie!
We usually pick up a few more besides these. There are a couple of great brew fests, plenty of fruit-specific harvest ones, a gravity fest with insane downhill skateboarders, too many winery related ones to count, and a bunch more sports themed ones too.
On top of all this, we have three communities that do the "artwalk" thing every month. First Friday, Last Friday, Second Thursday, etc. I like to play an early gig at these, then wander around with my bass and sit in on one or two later ones. This year we have a First Friday gig on the 4th of July that runs 6-9 in a classy old hotel, playing old school jazz, then my buddies are playing 8-12 a block up the street at the local juke joint, doing surf, SRV, a few rock covers and original rock and jazzy blues tunes. I was the original bassist in that band, so I get to sit in pretty regularly. The town closes down the main street for this, and typically there will be 15-20 acts playing various venues at the same time -- good times!
All this is just local stuff. If we felt like traveling we could easily stay busy all summer just with festival shows.

Here's a few more I found out about.
We are doing one of the Blues Under the Stars Summer Concert Series shows at the Albuquerque Museum on June 21st.
We are also on the bill at the city of Albuquerque's Summer Fest on June 28, the Fabulous Thunderbirds are headlining. The city hosts free admission concerts on the Civic Plaza downtown every Saturday in the summer.
Also we're doing Blues Under the Bridge festival in Colorado Springs on July 26th, again with Coco Montoya headlining. |

played our first one of the summer 2 weeks ago at NW Folklife Festival, audio of that gig is here: http://www.nwfolklifeaudio.org/2008F...3/SpareRib.mp3
this weekend we're playing the Bavarian Bike & Brews Festival up in Leavenworth, WA. It features an 8 mile mountain bike course with races during the day (300 competitors have signed up), followed by a micro-brew beer festival on an organic farm with my bluegrass band playing 4 sets over 5 hours.
Should find out today if we got into Yonder Mountain's NW String Summit Festival's Band Competition, which is mid-july (crossing fingers/toes/nuts).
In August, i'll be playing at local NW jam band - Flowmotion's Summer Meltdown Festival. my full band can't make it, so we're putting together an all-star bluegrass jam band made up of local pickers to play traditionals, grateful dead and phish covers. still trying to figure out our time slot, since our original time slot got snagged by last minute addition of Buckethead & That One Guy! looks like we'll be playing a latenight (2am-3am) set instead.
and add in a couple small mountain community summer festivals to finish out august/september.. and i think our last "festival" gig we have on the books is in early october for a Scottish Games Ball.. gotta break out the kilt for that one, and learn some scottish songs, hehe. |

On Sunday the 15th, my surf band will play at the Sundance dance hall on East Mulberry in Fort Collins, 12:30-2:30 PM. The ghostriders motorcycle club does a charity poker run on Father's Day, and we're the band at the Sundance to welcome them to the end of the run.
No cover charge, plenty of cold beer, should be a BBQ buffet available, and an auction.
Y'all come!

The Mountain of Blues Fest was fun, good weather, great bar-b-que at the show, and lots of good music, Coco and his band were very friendly, real good folks, (I got a few pics, I'll post later) and downright smokin' playin' the blues. I met his new bassist, Jason Langley and we spent some time talking gear and all things bass. Jason is a great guy and a superb player, ( http://www.jasonlangley.com/Jason/Welcome.html) his solo was off the hook. Check out his site if you get a chance. He and the rest of the band were very gracious and my drummer and I hung out with them at the jam after the show, had some cocktails and watched all the young ladies, great fun. We'll see them again in Colorado Springs on July 26th at another festival.
Our set wasn't bad, we got lots of kudos from both musicians and fans, although I thought my own solo was lame. I listened to the recording they made for us and it turned out to be not as bad as I thought. We tend to be our own worst critic I suppose. Still plenty of room for improvement though, so I'll be working on that.
All in all a nice experience and we made a little money to make it worthwhile. Can't wait to play the next festival!
EDIT: Forgot to mention, Jason used an Alleva-Coppolo 5 (the big red bass!) Jazz style, sounded great (so light!), with an AG500 and 2 Aggie GS112's. Tight, big sound, yet articulate. Gotta say though that I'm convinced his tone is mostly in his hands, top notch gear notwithstanding.

edit: confirmed for that Saturday, waiting on time slot
from the little i know about the festival, it's a 4 day thing that will include multiple stages, music going well into the night hours, camping, mountain biking, etc. music ranges from soul to electronic to progressive, should be an eclectic variety!

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Apr 2003 Location: The Duke City | | Here is a short blog on our weekend gigs, with the festival show happening yesterday afternoon.
Got back late last night from a 4 date 'micro tour' of Northern Colorado this past weekend.
1) Thursday night at the 'Big Hoss Grill' in Snowmass Village. Small venue, in a mall on the ski mountain. They had 'Gaelic Storm' playing the ski hill stage and when that show was over, the overflow came our way. Drummer on cajon due to the small nature of the venue. Went very well, got paid ok (7 bills for a trio), they fed us, and quenched our thirst repeatedly, plus the crowd plied us with uncountable shots, sold over 30 CD's, so all in all great fun, and a bit of a hangover the next day!!
2 & 3) Friday and Sat night in Steamboat Springs at the Tugboat. This is a regular gig we do, maybe 3 times a year. decent pay, plus drinks & food and they have a band house they put us up in (3 br, 2 ba, all the fixins you need). The bar staff told me they were the best 2 nights of the summer, so far, and I could believe it. Friday was packed and folks stayed until we were done. Sat night was slightly less jammed, but a rugby tournament in town assured us of a rowdy and vocal audience, and it was fun. SS is a wonderful, beautiful place and it's great to have gigs there.
4) Sunday afternoon at the Keystone Blues Festival and Art Show at the ski area. Beautiful views, nice folks, we opened for the Lee Boys ( http://www.leeboys.com/?q=home) and had a great time. $6.5 bills for 90 mins, and sold about 40 CD's, so it was a successful show to say the least. Got a great response from the crowd, had a fabulous philly cheese steak, and a lime sno-cone after the show, and made some contacts about festivals in Winter Park and Breckenridge. The Lee Boys are some groovin' dudes let me tell you, and it was fun to be part of the crowd for once.
It's fun, but it was really good to get home, I am exhausted. We got in about 2:30 am and I had to be at work at 7:30, so now I'm headed home for a nap.
