Power versus Frequency

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for information that shows the relationships between power requirements, frequencies, and sound pressure levels for a research paper I'm writing.

For example, if X watts are required to generate a 100 dB SPL @1meter at 20 Hz, how many watts does it take to generate the same SPL at 200 Hz, 2 kHz, and 20kHz?

I realize that there are myriad details to consider, but I'm not looking for hyper-technical answers, only "rules of thumb" that help explain the nuances of psychoacoustics and sound reinforcement in language that's easy for the average community-college student to understand.

Does anyone know of a book or website that provides this kind of info in a format that's relatively easy to digest?

Thanks!

I know you don't want to get incredibly technical, but you can't just disregard the speakers, the kind of information you're looking for varies greatly between speakers.

Thanks for your response: I hear ya.

I'm trying to keep equipment-specific references to a minimum while trying to explain, as simply as possible, concepts like Fletcher-Munson curves, and the similarities and differences between "pink" and "white" noise.

I'm not trying to discuss what kind of gear is capable of producing what kinds of results (that'll come next semester); I'm trying to convey some rudimentary concepts related to human perception of sound, the relative power levels required to reproduce very low notes versus mid-range notes, the logarithmic nature of the dB scale, and so forth.
