Practice necks?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help!!

Does anyone know if its possible to purchase "practice necks" online? By practice neck I just mean about 5 frets of neck with strings on so you can practice with your left hand when ever you have a free moment. I remember stumbling across a website a few years ago, but I can't find anything on the web now. Any pointers would be much appreciated!!

Thanks

That's odd. I never heard of practice necks. In fact, I doubt practicing on a piece of neck with perpetually the same fret spacing is useful.

Closest to this I can recommend is the Traveler Bass. It's by no means a pocket-sized toy, but at least you can practice actual playing and not worry about carrying anything else than the bass itself.

Sure you weren't thinking of PraxAx? It's meant for practicing your plucking/picking though.

Thanks for the responses guys! Yes I checked out the PraxAx and it does indeed look familiar. There is a link on the site though, to http://www.letechnique.com/ , which is the product I remember seeing! So thanks for that. Only has it for guitar though

Lalabadie, do you think it would be a bad thing to always practice on the same spacing? I only have one bass, so my fingers always use the same spacing there. I would only use a neck for practicing whilst on lunch at work though, legato and trills, et al. But i wouldn't wanna do it if it wasn't beneficial!

I was thinking about something like this for a couple of years now... recently, I found this on thomann:

which is exactly what I wanted, but for guitar... if they make one for bass I might pick one up.

I was more talking about the fact that you are exercising over the same part of the neck (seems like frets 5-10 or something like this), so you will not be able to simulate being at the top of the neck (more spacing) or in the higher range (closer frets). But overall, to practice finger movement, I guess it can very well be worth it. The decision is up to you.

I would love to have a neck with strings fitted to it, not tuned to tension or meant to produce any sound, just a full sized neck I could lug round and practice shapes on whenever I had a spare moment.

I guess it's not the best idea, but still.

How about getting getting a neck-thru bare bones neck & putting a bridge on it? No body wings & no pups, just neck, bridge, tuners, & strings. It could travel light & simulate a full bass for practice. Like this:

man, i remember these things...it was like a finger strengthening and dexterity device, but, indeed, it was a piece of fingerboard with strings on it...7 or 8 frets, maybe? they used to advertise them in bass player mag probably 15 years or so ago...haven't seen anything about them in a long time
