Question Practicing bass on an acoustic guitar....

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, how many of you do it?? I'm a complete beginner that wants to work on my finger movements on the fretboard... I know i cant slap an acoustic....

One of my friends did it and he is getting good...

The reason i wanna do this is because i can't afford a Bass Guitar...YET... But a Acoustic guitar only costs abt roughly 30-50 USD.

(The only time i get to play bass with my band is during jamming sessions at jamming centres. For you who don't know what that is, we pay abt 6-10 USD to play for an hour in a soundproof room. All the instruments provided.)

Ouh, and we need a new name for our band... We decided on _____ Distortion. Help us fill in the blank! Thanks!

well Social Distortion is already taken, and anything else could look like a rip-off.

Wow, I actually used to do this.

I had a POS acoustic, and I had no interest in playing guitar. I was trying to convince my parents to let me play bass (they thought it was impractical, and that I should play something more useful, like guitar). So all I did was play basslines on my acoustic.

Way back in the day, I actually restrung my old Yamaha acoustic with bass strings. I put the low E where it was supposed to go, put the A where the D was supposed to go, and put the D where the B was supposed to go. It was crappy not having a fourth string, but it was kinda nifty.

I've never heard of a jamming center? What type of instruments do they provide you with?

But about your original question, I would say no don't get the acoustic. It's just money down the drain. Just save for something like an SX or a cheap Ibanez.

I agree with Kruton. SX's don't have the best electronics, but they'll certainly suit your needs. I'd recommend the Ibby, though. Cheap as they may be, they're not bad basses.

Yeah, I would save money for a real bass guitar, rather than buying an acoustic guitar. The problem with learning on an acoustic is that the spacing of the frets and strings is generally different than on a true bass guitar, so you'll sort of have to relearn your playing when you switch to even a basic four string bass.

Maybe search used gear shops in your area for a beginner bass?

If you have a guitar it doesn't hurt to practice on it though its not the most ideal practicing scenario. I work out basslines on my acoustic all the time just because i don't have to plug anything in and i can do it quietly. I don't consider that a practice regemin though. You can definately learn the notes that way but you'll have some trouble with you technique if you practice that way all the time.

Like someone above said, try to save up. Keep practicing on the acoustic if you have to but get a bass.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahhahaha haaha!!!!!

Y am i laughing?
Cause you asked me what instruments provide me! Hahahaha

Well, lets start with bass... SQUIER!!
Well, i don't mind playing squier.... But we're talking abt Squier that's probably older then me and used every day by countless different people! The vol knob at some of em keep turning by itself to zero.... That pisses me off a lot... And since im pretty big... The lowest the straps can go is to BARELY below my chest... I know some of you are used to this, but we're playing genres like punk etc.... So my hands get pretty tired when playing... On TOP of that, they don't change straps unless they cant be used anymore.... Just imagine... THOUSANDS of customers after one an other using the same thing with their sweaty shoulders. And the pickups just plain sucked.

moving to guitars, all OLD squiers... They look like they've been thru a WAR! hahaha!
But nevermind that, im not playing it....

The drums?? DISASTER!!!!!!!
Like other things, never maintained!!!

The toms and snare are taped to cover the tears... the legs for the set are sumtimes not all there... They basically balanced the toms so it wont fall.... And the hi hat is SOOO rusty that you cant clap it or even adjust it.

The sticks?? If you break one (not a pair), you will have to pay ard 0.50 USD to replace it... I know... Sad aint it....

And the sticks are so chipped! After every session, look at the floor! Looks like a workshop! Wood chipping EVERYWHERE!

Amps? They use roland for bass... Forgot what they used for guitar... COMBOS i might add... ard 100watt-200watt i think.

The might stand cannot be adjusted. Broken. Not replaced. Mics just plain sucked.

Overall the room, One drumset, 1 bass, 2 guitars (without whammy bars in any of em! )
All in a small soundproof room.

And ouh, pay extra to use an effect. Basically its all either danelectros of boss. Basically only distortion and overdrive.

Well, "pros" go there to jam but they bring their own stuff. i think the only reason they go there is to use the drumset and they need a place to jam.

But the discriptions above are for the one that is popular. i went to others. better but not great.

Well... Enough ranting for now...

Beggars can't be choosers right??

Back to the topic... It will take me a VERY long time to save up for a bass, even the cheap ones! So acoustics all ive got bebeh!

Uh, someone mentioned putting bass strings on a yamaha acoustic...care to elaborte??

Sorry for the long post!

Those are a few Ibby's that'll empty your pocket the least.

god damn, i hate playing bass on a six string acoustic. when i go over my buddy's house, that's all he has, so i have to pick it up and thump at high octave levels. gross.

Being in Singapore probably makes the prices much higher than the ones in those links.
