Problem with a Stratocaster

Sign in to disble this ad
My dad bought a used Fender Strat a few days ago. It's a late 90s '62 Reissue with a Warmoth neck. When the pickup selector was on any of the middle 3 positions, there was an intermittent crackling and the volume would cut out. But it wouldn't happen all the time, only sometimes. And it only happens on the middle positions, not on either of the end positions. So today, I swapped the pickup selector with a brand new one, and the problem is still there. It didn't happen right when I swapped the selector, but my dad told me that it came back. He says when it was happening, he was moving both tone pots, and there was no change. Any ideas? I haven't taken a look at it since the problem returned, but I would think that it's either a problem with the second tone pot or the middle pickup. But I'm no expert, so any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Try cleaning out your volume and tone pots.

In the August issue of Guitar World they have a segment on the CD on how to clean it out. I can't find it right now, but I'll continue to look. Are you sure it isn't the hum that Strats normally have?

Edit: Found a website that might help

Thanks, I'll take a look. No, this isn't single coil hum, this is a crackle, and the volume cuts out.

That sounds like either dust in the pots, or a bad middle pickup.
