Prog Wars: Pink Floyd vs. RUSH

Alright, time for a throwdown. Which is the better prog rock band? I've always loved both...but since I predominantly listen to Rush all the time, I've been in a Floyd kick as of late.

Pick a side...or is it a draw?

If we are talking which bands members can beat the other at some sort of measurable sporting event, then we can say who is "better". Anything else is purely a personal subjective opinion.

Oh and Rush all the way!

Rush. Their early style of writing and some of the epics are unbeatable. So far as I'm concerned, Pink Floyd doesn't have anything that compares to Xanadu or Cygnus X-1 Books 1&2. There was a strong vision that carried through a lot of Rush's music.

I still like Pink Floyd, though.

Pink Floyd by far for me. Their music can have incredible depth and emotion. Geddy is an incredible musician, no doubt, but Rush's music just seems too wanky and shallow to me.

Those are two VERY different styles of music. I love 'em both for different reasons. If I had to choose one it would be Floyd though.

Pink Floyd easily
Chart wise they win, and as far as I'm concerned they win otherwise.
Dark Side has been on the charts for how long?
And that's not even talking about my personal favorite the Wall.
Once again, Pink Floyd easily.

Oh I beg to differ. DSOTM was not prog in its heyday? C'mon eileen...

In fact, I like to think PF was the very first tried and true Prog band.

I thought they were an art-rock band. To me, King Crimson is prog.

Early Pink Floyd is proggish, but I've never considered them a prog band when put next to King Crimson, Yes, or Peter Gabriel's Genesis.

So I'd say Rush is by far the better prog band, and Pink Floyd the better band period. Don't get me wrong, I like Rush, but there is nothing in their catalog that resonates (with me) like the Dark Side/Wish You Here/Animals triumvirate.

For what it's worth, I can't stand The Wall or Final Cut.

Carrots. I can't live without either one. Which one I listen to depends on my mood.

And PF was definitely a prototype prog rock band. Starting out with long space rock jams like Interstellar Overdrive and on through Echoes, which is a legitimate prog rock song. But it's not virtuosic bass-heavy stuff like Yes or 70s Rush, so it doesn't always fit the category. Floyd is its own thing.

Rush is probably my favorite all time band. Fearless and inventive, as Jabba the Hutt would say, they aren't afraid to buck popular trends, and had the guts to stick it out when things were tough, and they've never really slowed down or got bored with what they are doing. Their newest album is amazing and shows their love for the music and the fans, and the live performance I saw last month was unbelievably energetic.
