I plan to be in Boston on May 20th. Opeth and Dream Theater are two bands I want to see before I die, I've already seen 3 and know they're good, and everything I've heard about Between the Buried and Me suggests they're amazing live.

Just came back from the second show in Calgary. I must say, everybody but Dream Theater was absolutely amazing. Dream Theater sucked really bad.

Is it ever acceptable to spit on stage? Didn't think so. So why the **** is Mike Portnoy spitting into the audience and all over the stage??? I left halfway through their first song both nights, and each time he hawked about 5 loogies into the crowd and 10 more all over the stage. Disgusting.

Three was amazing! I thought they were good after having listened to their latest CD, but the live show was excellent. They had the whole crowd chanting when they were done their set and there was a huge rush to their merch table afterwards. Talked to them for a little while, they're nice guys. BTBAM was also pretty good. And Opeth was fantastic as always. Talked to Martin Mendez after the show! He gave me the setlists to both shows

*does her best Ernest from the opening scene of ...Goes To Camp* Ewwwwwwwwwww...

Does Portnoy have a rep for spitting like that during shows? This makes one cannot help but wonder...

And obviously, yes, I have yet to attend a Dream Theater show. Have really wanted to, but may have to reconsider if this is a frequent habit of Portnoy's...

Until happening upon this, I've never heard of Three or Between The Buried And Me, but will definitely have to look into sampling them ASAP based on what I have read here.

I have no idea if he has a rep for doing it or not. The stage was REALLY bright, so the spit was quite noticeable. My girlfriend even commented on it before asking me if I wanted to leave (the second show, she didn't come with me the first one).

I really wanted this to come to Philly. And yea, Portnoy has a reputation for spitting..they talk about it in a couple of the documentaries, Petrucci, the guitarist, had to get a spit cover for his amps so that they wouldn't end up coated in spit..yea, not the most professional thing, I guess.

I thought Mike stopped spitting :/

Was never overly fond of it -- not hugely happy that he's started again...

Is their live sound worse than all the other bands? Myung's bass burried? Standard, standard...

Wish this was coming to Europe. Oh well

All you could hear was drums and guitar, unless Myung was hitting anything below an E, then you felt the bass. It was really boring just watching them since not much was going on. Three OTOH was awesome live. The percussionist/keyboard player was really into the music and playing and was fun to watch. Talking to one of the guitarists/singer after the show, I mentioned how much better they sounded live than on their CD, and he said that it was pretty much about playing live anyways.

The LA show sounded great. Heard Myung a lot.

Then again, the Gibson is pretty much one of the top places I've heard for bass.

Have you ever seen the Fall of Troy. Man the guitarist/singer would spit in the air and have it land in his hand. He would then proceed to throw it into the crowd or at some random guy backstage.

However, thier show seemed more, warranted for htat kind of behavior. Dream Theater doens't seem like that kind of band to me.

I was going to go to the Oakland show, but I didn't have the clams . Two of my friends went though and they said it was incredible. I especially want to see 3. Oh well.

I saw this tour too. 3 were awesome. I loved Opeth and BTBAM though I'm already a big fan. I don't think their setlists would have won over any fans of regular prog though.

DT, I like their first couple albums and am unfamiliar with most of their later work so it was a pretty insufferable set not helped by the fact that three awesome and loud bands had already played - the body/ears can only take so much even with earplugs. I'd say about 30% of their show was very soul-less guitar solos or very soul-less guitar solos played on the keyboard and keytar. No idea why they're clueless about the crappiness of those virtually identical solos played over and over vs. playing actual songs, most of which are mass shredding anyway.

Given they've never played here, they owed the fans much better IMO. Very hard to hear Myung unless the other guys were leaving him room in a particular passage.

And yeah, the spitting is both childish and gross.
