Progressive Rock Lives

We've all seen links posted in these forums from youtube and such featuring crappy junior high school garage bands doing crappy covers. These kids are actually pretty good! These guys are carrying the progressive torch for a new generation.

Here's a link to some of the other song's they've covered.
Mindwalk

On the Kings X cover their vocals were severly autotuned. The harmonies sounded like robots, kinda scary. Good playing though.

I'm sure that will happen as they progress. I took a look at their other videos and was very impressed.

I'd love to see them in another 5-10 years.

Jesus, why do people say **** like this? You know, if you're not just rocking out power chords all day long, it's kind of hard to jump around like an idiot and do kickflips off your amp. Why do people (ESPECIALLY MUSICIANS) care if they are dancing around on stage... when did that become part of music? The fact that someone in that band is 11 and probably a better player than you isn't enough? He needs to play behind his back and set his axe on fire?

Sorry for the rant, I just get so ****ing sick of this mindset. You're not a musician unless you're "rawkin' oUt! lolz"

I know I couldn't play YYZ at that age.

Damn. Those kids were good. Awesome in fact. I too would love to see where they are in another 5 to 10. Shoot, as is, they sound better than many "seasoned" bands out there.

Sad day. I'm jelous of a 12 year old. (Assuming the age of the bassist)

I knew progressive rock was still alive after hearing Frances the Mute.

Juan Alderete sounds awesome on that album to boot(and on a fretless P, no less)

These guys sound really good and the fact that they're doing so well at such a young age is great, but I've just been going over their website and the fact that they've got "recorded at ages 11-14" on every single page is pissing me off, and it feels like they're just trying to pimp out that single fact till the end of time.

I have the distinct feeling that at least one of those kids parents is a professional recording engineer/musician. I really really hope there's nothing fishy going on.

Even if that is the case, the parents aren't the ones playing the instruments. There wasn't anything fishy going on with the Jacksons except for the fact that Joe was hard-a#$.

Woah now there children! Is there a reason to be so defensive.

Not once did I suggest these kids should bounce around, jump around, do backflips, wear tights, or get naked. I'm not really certain I said anything disrespectful regarding this group whatsoever. As a matter of fact, my criticism was immediately backed by a compliment. I'll accept the grammar of the constructive criticism wasn't up to par for a college level presentation and was brief. For what it's worth I think the drummer is quite gifted and provides an amazing foundation for these guys.

Any point I wish to make is this; as a group they are absolutely expressionless - almost bored with themselves. While the point of them being able to develop some emotion as they progress is understandable, the other side of that comment is there have been plenty of 'kids' show true emotion when performing from the youngest of beginnings. (an example here being Christina Aguilera) I don't really believe age to be a factor, actually I would expect more excitement from younger players.

My observation has nothing to do with the age of the performers or my own skill set. The passive aggressive attempt to personally insult me here really comes from left field. What does it matter that anyone is 'probably a better player than' [me] (or anyone else)? That type of thinking has no usefullness to me. Playing music is not a competition.

There's my rant, no apologies.

Hmm, rereading what I wrote I can see that I was pretty unclear in what I was trying to express. What I mean is that this might be a case where the parents are pushing theํr children into doing this. The song choices aren't typical for kids their age(they would fit better with a 40-something music afficionado) and that their website repeatedly states just how young they are sounds to me like "Look at how amazing our children are! Look at them!". There's a thin line between supporting your childrens gifts and pushing too hard and the Jackson's are a perfect example of what happens when things cross the line.
Of course I could be completly wrong and these kids are simply emulating their parents and have found an unconventional(for their age) way of expressing their joy for music.

I see what you're saying . I agree that it can get completely out of hand. I would liken you concern to pageant moms here in the states who put their daughters in beauty pageants from birth. But in this case, I sincerely hope these kids are doing it for their love of the music.
