When it comes to James Brown, just listen to his early records. Before, he found the funk, he was almost a Jackie Wilson clone.

Cheese it's not about how many pop musicians listened to Sun Ra's music(or aspects of it). But the fact that before pop was pop or funk became what it eventually became(liked by the masses) one can find traces of it in Sun Ra's music dating through the 50's and 60's. George Clinton even gives props to Sun Ra's influence on his own aspects of the development of his own funk concept.

Even hobbyists like me listen to a wide variety of music, wouldn't a honest to goodness pro like James Brown or George Clinton do at least as much?
