Exclamation Pull me out of the Guitar World!

Well, like most people here, I'm a bassist, but recently, I started listening to some cool guitar stuff... I got really inspired and really want to start playing the guitar, but I can't because I've made an oath to myself (now everyone knows) never to play guitar, but this is very tempting... Buckethead, Steve Vai, and all those people are poisoning my mind with their guitars... what do I do???

I play both and have yet to be struck by a lightning bolt from the bass gods.
You'll be alright, you already know they are two different worlds.

Well, a few reasons, first, is money, I wouldn't want to spend another few hundred or even thousand dollars to buy guitar equipments after just spending bunch of money on bass stuff. Secondly, if I start playing guitar and get really good, it'll be hard for me to find a band because I either have to find a really good bassist (hard to find) if I play guitar or a really good guitarist (of course, I'm comparing them to myself) if I'm playing bass... And I'll feel wierd.

PLAY GUITAR!!!

Every bassist should know guitar basics. It's very very handy to be able to watch a guitarist play and know what chords they are playing. Also, it's fun. Stop being a bassist, start being a musician. Sounds like a burn on bass, but in reality, you should just make music, nevermind what instrument it's on.

As much as enough people have said it already, just play guitar and stop beating yourself up about it. It'll make you a better player and give you more of a hint about the people you're working with.

You could even fill in as a guitarist and have people worship you so you can laugh in their faces and say:
"MUHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!! I'm a bass player! and I've used this chameleonic disguise to trick you into bowing before me!!!"

Well said, as a matter of fact, I just may reposess my daughters drum set. Maybe keyboards if I live that long.

Why restrict yourself from playing guitar? On your average day I spend more time playing guitar than bass, but my love is still with bass. I ordered a custom guitar before I ordered a custom bass, but it's something I love and I felt what I needed wasn't available on the market so I had it made for me.

The only problem with guitar GAS... is you need the Strat, the Tele, something with humbuckers, something with P90's, a nice acoustic for standard tuning, one for open tunings, and a twelve string, that's before you get like me and turn to love baritones, so I need the baritone acoustic and the baritone electric, and I love 12's so I need a 12 string Strat, and then there's the matter of the extra acoustic for Nashville tuning.

Wow, I've got some serious GAS.

Haha, I hjad made that same promise to myself when I fist started playing bass. But then I started playing guitar too, at first I just wanted to learn the basics to get into songwriting but now I play for real in bands and stuff, but mostly still just recreationally. Of course, bass is still my main instrument, I think I'm better at it too.

The only problem is what typlyons said, the GAS. I find myself having to divide my spending money between the two. I spend more on bass stuff because it's more important that I have good quality bass gear because I play out regularly. Also it seems that good bass stuff is more expensive than good guitar stuff.

Anyway, you can't hurt anything by just giving it a go, just remember to keep that GAS under control.

I wouldn't say that, it's all in what you'll settle for. I have more money tied up in guitar stuff than bass stuff and I have nice bass stuff.
Strats aren't bad, but start into Gibson Les Pauls, PRS's, Martin and Taylors, Marshall and Mesa tube amps. Your right in the same ball park as the high end bass stuff.
One of my PRS's is the most expensive instrument I own. Next is my MTD 535. My Marshall was more than my Eden.
Just like bass, there is quality stuff cheaper.

You want expensive guitar stuff?

Go look for a Hughes and Kettner Triamp Mk II. That alone is a $3000 amp head.

And it sounds GLORIOUS. The only piece of gear we've ever tried (and bought!) that completely justified its price tag. Monstrous.
