I love listening to music period. Im starting to listen to punk a lot. I have been listening to the ramones, the clash a little black flag and the circle jerks.
Can anyone recommend any good punk bands and are there any decent punk bassists?

Bad Brains.
These two bands have the best punk bassists ever. And no, it's NOT debatable.

| | | | hmm... who to add that's not on the list... I'll say, Redemption 87, minor threat, choking victim/leftover crack, the dead milkmen have also had a number of great tunes including "Punk Rock Girl" and "if you love someone set them on fire". I would have to give a big plus one to Rancid, the descendents, earlier dead kennedys, black flag, and bad brains.

Also The Clash. "Give Em Enough Rope" is more old school and is probably my favorite. "London Calling" is awesome as well.
Social Distortion. Bad Religion. Dropkick Murphys for something different.

Can anyone recommend any good punk bands and are there any decent punk bassists? | Here are a few good punk bass players' bands from the same general era and style you mentioned: Fear (Los Angeles, frontman Lee Ving was a total character but the band was really tight as well) The Rezillos (Scotland, had even more of a 60's pop vibe than the Ramones but also some fantastic bass playing) The Ruts (UK, one of the first bands to incorporate reggae influences into punk and one of the very, very few to do it well. Great bass playing, but tasteful)
I think Nomeansno (Canada) and the Minutemen (San Pedro, CA) are also really good bass suggestions (and awesome bands), but they're a lot weirder than the bands you listed so be warned, I guess! |

Here's a left-field one: Beefeater (Washington, DC), who played a pretty weird mix of funk (including slap bass!), punk, and metal. Some of the guitar playing reminds me of Bad Brains.
Oh, and the Big Boys (Texas) who were a more straightforward punk-funk band.
And hell, New Model Army (UK) were a pretty intense post-punk band very much built on a distinctive bass tone and style. Which is weird because I guess they went through a few bass players, but somehow they all sounded exactly alike. Band-bass-rig-syndrome, I guess. |

there have been some excellent recommendations. Mike Watt is a favourite of mine, as is Paul Simonin.
I would say check out Fat Mike from NOFX... not my favourite band, but very good at what they do, and he is an interesting pick player.
oh - and Nomeansno |
