Once in a while I sub for a bassist who learned to play the bass in his retirement.

Go for it.

If you're too old to drive to the music store to buy new strings or cables from time to time, you may be too old.

When you stop loving music, you're too old to learn bass.

I quit playing around 18, then picked it up again at 40. Had to relearn everything, but it is great.

Unless arthritis prevents you from moving your fingers properly, or osteoporosis etc prohibits you from playing an instrument on a strap (and even then, you can still play light basses / basses on a stand / upright basses), you can play bass at any age. I think, realistically, 80 is not too old to learn bass. Thirty-seven is PLENTY young.

If my fingers dropped off, I would probably play with my toes. Age is a state of mind.

I know you hear this soooo many times, but which do you find harder to play? Guitar or Bass and why? I appreciate everyone's input

Neither is more difficult, they're both as difficult as you make them. The basic concepts are similar and fairly simple. Dexterity may be an issue at first, but that is something that can be delt with through practice.

Also, there's how you approach either instrument. Rhythm, lead, pocket, soloing, walking lines...it depends on what music you have in your head and what you want to come out. There are so many styles and techniques to fill your head with and make into your own.

You just gotta have a good time with it. Difficulty isn't an issue. You'll experience times of frustration, we all do. You just gotta keep groovin' and roll with it.
