Question about Lil Wayne

Sign in to disble this ad
I keep hearing hype about lil wayne and about him being an amazing rapper. However, I think his rhymes are forced at many times and his lyrics often don't make sense.

And I'm pretty sure I'm not one of those people who just don't understand rap in general. I love lots of rap, and some of my favorites are Immortal Technique, Blackalicious, Jedi Mind Tricks, Public Enemy, and more.

So can someone explain to me why people (and not just any people, respectable figures in the hip hop genre) keep saying that Lil wayne is one of the best rappers alive.

By the way, I am by no means trying to put him down. I just want to know why people say he is a good rapper. Is it his rhyme pattern or rhythm or something?

Thanks,

keigo

not everyone likes the same kind of hip hop that you do.

he has a unique style though, you can't deny that

I completely agree. I'm just wondering WHY he's considered good, and what makes HIM quote, "the best rapper alive"

I have wondered this as well, although I will put him in the category of having some of the best dreadlocks alive. I love how the Lonely Island makes fun of him in their newest song.

If you need it explained to you, you're not going to get it.

That said, judging by the rappers you listed in your post, I wouldn't expect you to enjoy him.

But, in a nutshell:
He's got a real solid grasp on unique setups and payoffs, he's incredibly prolific, and he changed the face of the game with his mixtapes. He's certainly no Gift of Gab, but he isn't trying to be.

to answer this exact question, i think the more often a rapper says they're the best, the more often people will repeat it.

i'm curious, you like gab and blackalicious but not lyrics born?

lil wayne WAS good when he was 14. That's drugs for you.

Get the cash money CD "Hot Boyz" the one from like 1998 and you'll see what I'm talking about. IMHO after he started the dreads it was all downhill from there.

I agree with you, its like if you said you loved rock and roll like Van Halen and someone heard that and gave you a Black Flag or Wire album to check out. Different worlds.

I think Wayne's cadence and vocal inflection is really remarkable, it continues along the line of what Jay-Z was doing, but is more playful. It is definitely not old school delivery at all, which, given your taste, might be a turn off.

the only wayne cd i've ever liked was the first carter but i disagree with you, i think he was kind of a cookie cutter new orleans gangsta rapper back then, now he's a lot more distinctive

IMO the dreads are the only thing that he has going for him, and k-os has him beat in that department. Has him beat in the rapping department as well.

Lil Wayne is the Steve Vai of rappers: Really good, but has no soul.

If he is the one I'm thinking of (most rap I only hear when I'm with certain people) then he's got a kind of unique sounding voice, which I have heard described as "oh my god, so sexy."

Lil Wayne isn't that good IMO, but you gotta remember the competition he's up against. Outside of Jay Z, there are absolutely no competent rappers that he's up against...except maybe Kanye. So out of the pathetic pool of rappers that are out right now and are commercially successful....yeah, you could say he's the best

Whomever is making them, or has the potential to make others the most money is going to be regarded as 'the best' in todays day and age.

I dislike when people say stuff like this. It is obnoxious and alienates whomever it is that asked a question.

Yet another mush-mouthed loser propped up as a genius because they contain just enough bullet wounds/priors to make them seem dangerous to white suburban parents. Think Fifty Cent without the fun/cleverness.
