Question about my bass....

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought my bass a year ago, and started playing mostly steve harris' basslines. Some time ago I learned to play the "Blood on the World's Hands" intro bass solo, but, if any of you listened to it, at the 0:50 part, my bass makes a horrible noise, since the strings hit the frets too strongly. There's no way to aviod it, no matter how softly or strongly I do it, so I wanted to ask you what could be the cause of that noise. Could it be my bass, which is a really cheap 34"; could it be the strings, which are .45; could it be the distance of the strings to the neck (too high or too low)?

Technique issue, not bass or setup.
Strings hiting the rets are essential to Steve Harris's tone. Making it sound good is a matter of control.

but in the record i hear no strings hitting the frets... is it because it's an acoustic bass?

No, but I used other basses at stores and I don't have that problem, so I'm pretty sure it's my bass or my strings. Thinner strings could reduce the noise?

Use flats. Thats how Steve cuts excessive noise. He has signature Rotos to get brightness and cut the noise. http://www.juststrings.com/rts-sh77.html

probably a setup issue. last night I was setting up my bass, and realized that the pickups were too high by the G string, so every note from the 19th fret up was pure buzz. Just look around your bass and try to see what the problem is.
