Question about rack drawers...

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently got a ten space rack. I'm going to add two more rack spaces of components and end up with using a total of 8 spaces. I thought about putting a rack drawer in the last two spaces to hold cords, straps, and other misc. stuff. That way I don't have to make bring my suitcase of misc. items and that's one less trip to the vehicle at the end of the night. It wouldn't add much weight either.

I was wondering if anybody uses rack drawers in thier bass rigs? My main concern is rattling. Do the doors or their contents rattle when placed on top of a virbrating bass cab?

P.s. I'm thinking of going with a Middle Atlantic drawer.

Searching this very subject and stumbled upon this old thread. Anyone have an answer for the OP (and me) on this?

I never really found them to rattle, but the contents inside did rattle quiet a bit.

I went out to a hard ware store and bought some thin foam padding, kind of like what you would see a car machinic use in his tool box, it helps things from getting thrown every also.

Unless you play very quiet, i dont think you would be able to hear the rattle that bad though...

Rattling depends on whether it's a cheaply-made or heavy-duty drawer, what you put in it, and whether the rack is sitting on top of a cab that vibrates a lot. I've had racks that rattled and ones that didn't.

The one thing I can say though is that you will totally regret having a 10-space rack full of stuff. Once that puppy is full it will weigh well over 100 lbs, and the side handles are very awkward for one person to lift when it's full. Maybe you have a roady- but then you wouldn't need to consolidate all your gear into one rack. Maybe you never leave home- but then why bother racking the accessory stuff, just put it in a bag. If you're an 18-year-old football player or other young macho man, then maybe a 10-space rack is right for you.

Can't speak for the OP, but for me, I'm just thinking of a 4 space rack with a 3 space head and a 1 space rack drawer for cables, tuner, picks, etc.

Do they make 1-space drawers? I've only seen 2 and 3 space.

+1

I've got a 6 space rack. It's not even full-road-spec, and it's a tough lift alone. The guitarist has a full flight 6u rack and it's impossible to lift alone. It's fine AT the gig, but unloading when you get home isn't fun.

What do you have that NEEDS 8 spaces? I've got 3u power amp, 1u pre, 1u fx and 1u tuner. I wouldn't want to add any more...

My cables go in a back-pack, so I have them all even when I don't take out the "big" rig.

I'm so glad I found a combo that works for me. I used to have big racks with drawers. Handy but heavy.
