Why do people who use 5's or 6's need more than 4 strings?

It just creates new dynamics to the instrument and different challenges.

Because the music that's either in their head or the music they want to perform requires a range higher than that of a 6-string.

a bass with that many strings is good if you want to go higher and/or lower than the normal 4-6 strings...why not a guitar? well if you use that much range in one song, then having all that range in one instrument is better imo...also people like having a lot of strings to be able to stay in one postion while still being able to do a 3 octave run!
