Quick hearing test

Sign in to disble this ad
Here's a simple, quick hearing test:

Find an old penny, from 1981 or earlier. Flip it - by smacking it with your thumbnail. It produces a "ringing" sound that's in the 12 to 13 kHz range. If all you here is the "thup" of it being struck, you're probably not hearing much above 10kHz.

The newer (zinc, not copper) pennies don't ring. I didn't realize how high the pitch of the copper ones was until I tried to demonstrate the difference to some friends. Two of them (both over 45) couldn't hear anything from either one. So I ran the sound through an analyzer.

Phew, I can hear it.
Cool trick, I would have never known. I had a 1964 and a 1985 penny.

Flip it into the air with your thumb like this.

Sorry, best pic I could find.

Make sure you stick your tongue out or you wont be able to hear it.

I recall being able to hear it. I didn't realize that the newer pennies didn't ring. I knew they had different compositions, but never related that to ringing.

I can hear it. What amazed me more was that I was able to find '80 MIA penny in my room.

Another good hearing test is to find a TV made in 1981 or earlier and turn it on. If you can hear the extremely high pitched sound, you're good.

It's pretty bad when MIA comes into conversations about money too

And yes, my old TV does that. Frankly, most computer monitors too. It drives me nuts!

How about quarters, or basically anything other than a penny? The advange would be that even new quarter|dimes|nickels|dollars ring. Of course, I don't know at what pitch they do it.

Yup, My old TV is the same, and actually, my new TV, from late last year does the same. It's in the basement. I can hear it from the second level, In my room. Two floors above. I must be real good!

It's actually making me crazy.

every TV or crt monitor I've ever used makes that annoying high pitched whine. it drives me insane, especially when I'm really close like plugging something in, it's almost unbearable

OK put myself in a silent room, flipped a coin and I heard a ring. Then I turned on an old TV and I heard a ring. Then I turned the TV off I could still hear a ringing noise. I guess my hearing is brilliant!

Anyone seen this about the "mosquito" ringtone?

http://www.ringtonesgalore.co.uk/enh...obiletonescom/

apparently only people under the age of 16 can hear it.
I hope it annoys them.....

I don't fit the demographic (24), but I can hear it. It's really annoying.

It's not so much under 16 (FWIW I'm 16 and can hear it) but I think it sarts fading more when you hit 30+.

And I can hear up to 18.8kHz. And it hurts.

I can hear up to about 19.5KHz. I'm using a program called NCH Tone generator. Be sure to turn the volume down before you use it though, some of that high stuff is very piercing.

Oh, I just tested, and I don't know if it is my headphones rolloff, or my ears, but I am hearing things around 14.5Hz

I don't think audacity reproduces 20KHz quite right. It actually sounds lower than 14KHz. May be just the algorithm can't quite get it. Try downloading the NCH Tone Generator, and see if it's just my copy that's messed up.
