Quirk:What distracts you when you play?

Sign in to disble this ad
I think that most players admitedly have quirks about their playing. One of these quirks could be things that, break up your focus, or makes it difficult for you to play. I have noticed that I have some wierd things that through me off of my game

1. A fretless bass with lines.

2. A drummer with poor timing.

3. A bad singer.

4. Someone playing out of tune.

5. Gear issues.

Either of these is a recipe for disaster for me.

I don't get distracted by band issues, they're a constant, but a butt, or a crowd issue will get my attention in a frigg'in heartbeat...Cheers

A drummer with bad timing is really the only thing that distracts me. I won't play with a drummer who can't keep time.

My issue is that I sometimes get too comfortable with songs and find myself thinking about other things while I am playing.

i find its me that distracts me when i'm playing
i do this thing on a well rehearesed song where i'll be concentrating on something else (hot chick in the audience, rocking out, banter with the guitarists etc etc)
and while i'm doing this i wont miss a beat the problem comes when i stop concentrating on said distraction and the left side of my brain turns round and says "what are you playing"
and the right side say "er cant remember ask muscle memory he was filling in for me"
unfortunatly at this point muscle memory has well and truly legged it never to be seen again

I don't consider working with bad musicians a distraction. That just sucks.

Someone talking to me while I'm playing -- often a band member, drives me crazy.

My own brain. If I thought in english it would sound something like:
__________________________________________________ _______

Hey, I have an idea for a quick riff over the next chord change.

Nah, better play it straight like we practiced.

Oh c'mon, It'll be awesome. you know it will.

Nah.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEASE......

Oh shut up, why do you have to do this to me. Fine. I'll play it.

Cool, here it comes.... play it right... now!

Not bad. That sounded pretty good. Nice call brain. I'll do it that way again. Maybe not every time. That would be repetitive, perhaps just after the 2nd verse onward...

I knew you would like it. Hey I have this idea for during the chorus if you hit octaves on the...... hey wait... why does everything sound like crap now.

F@#$! I missed the next chord change! DAMN YOU BRAIIIIIIIN!!!!!!

A drunk guy staggering towards me. I just know he's gonna fall on me or puke on me or talk to me. That all sucks.

Anyone invading my personal space while I play is distracting.
