R Stones - what happened to the bass line here

If you ever get chance to listen the the Rolling Stones number "Little by Little" - what the heck has happened to the bass line?
Apart from the intro the notes are "rumbly - indistinct - and wolly" but all remarkably in tune. Just what is being played there - or is it all some studio cotton-wool dial effect :-)
