Rackmounting a wireless unit?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recentley bought a Senheiser ew100 wireless unit, and a rack shelf type thing that is supposed to be what I needed for racking the unit. I'd rather ask a stupid question and keep things in working order, than just assume and be left with damaged equipment...
1. The wireless receiver has antenna's, if I rack the unit, the antenna's will have to be laying down... Am I missing something on this one, or will the wireless still receive everything?
2. The rack shelf thing is basically a base plate and rack ears with holes on the bottom to screw into. Am I supposed to insert the screws directly to the receiver up from the racking unit that I bought, or is there another part that im missing. I dropped a good amount of money on the wireless, so I want to make sure im not making any mistakes here.
Thanks in advance guys, I appreciate it.

Not sure about question #2, but your assumption sounds reasonable.

About #1. I have a Shure UXLS that has a small 1/2 or 1/3 sized reciever unit and have a four space rack with teh head in the middle two spaces. I put the receiver unit in the bottom space and the antenna just rotated so the unit fits under there. Most of the time I'm not that far away from it and it doesn't leave the house often (I got it to make jam and recording sessions with a guitarist friend easier) but once in a while just for kicks I walk around the house and play. I've even gone outside just to check noise the noise level when I have the amp cranked up. I never noticed any reception problem with the antenna laying flat like that.

Yes, you are missing something, and you have more than you need, all at once. Firstly, You should have received a piece of steel that has one rack ear, and two holes (approx 1/2" diameter) on the face. And you should have two pieces that are like 90 degree angle brackets. These two angle brackets attach to the sides of the receiver with two tiny little screws (supplied). Now you will attach the longer piece (with the large holes) to either of the two angle brackets. It doesn't matter which one, it just depends on whether you want your receiver on the right side of your rack or the left. It attaches with two larger screws (once again, provided). You should now have an assembly that is 19" wide. Yeah, I know, that last one was a little obvious, but I'm trying to not miss anything. The big flat plate is used when you are mounting two units. It connects the two together, on the bottom of the units. If you are only mounting one, you have a very nice paperweight. It's a spare part. Now, about those antennae. You need to get two adapter cables. Sennheiser sells them as part number AM-2. They run around $45 for a pair. Remove the antennae from the back of your receiver, and connect these adaptor cables in their place. Now attach the other ends of the cables through those 1/2" holes in the rack plate. I hope this is not too complicated to read, as it is really a very simple assembly. It probably would be simpler if Sennheiser would include instructions, and include all of the parts that you will need, and forget about the ones that you probably won't need.

Its nice to know that I dropped 450 bucks on a wireless unit, and they left out the parts to make it rackmountable... Thank you for the help though, I appreciate it.

Well, actually, they left the parts out of the rackmount kit. If you are half as happy as I am with your purchase, it will be $450 well spent. Happy to help. That's what TB is all about.

For sure... I like to move across the stage a lot, and having me and two guitarist on the same stage, it can get messy. I love the unit though. So much so that my guitarist just got the same model. Mine is better though, because its mine.

I've just added the ew300iem to my rack, (that's why I know what the flat plate is used for). But I have had my ew100 for a little over a year now. I have been very happy with it. Way back in the day, I had a Nady wireless. That was enough to turn me away from wireless for over twenty years! I'm very glad that I gave it another chance.

eW's ROCK!
Yes, it's kinda wierd getting no "ears" to mount for the $$$.
I do believe they make/sell antenna that plug into the same connector but can mount outside of the rack.
