Okay- gotta get this off my chest.

In the batch of new songs we are doing, it was voted that we are doing the song "Crazy Bitch" and when I went to learn it I couldn't becaue I was so po'ed that such a cheesey assed song was picked for us to cover.

Look, I know not everyone has the same taste in music, and I understand and usually respect that. This song is the "Talk Dirty toMe" of the 2000's though. Where the hell is the taste in music?!?! It sucks so much I fear for the chrome on my trailor hitch....

We all play music that we think sucks. It doesn't matter if we like it, it matters if the crowd likes it. If it makes them dance and buy drinks, then it's all good.

A valid point that get's brought up, but I don't care if the crowd likes it or not. It matters more to me if I like it moreso, otherwise I'd be in a country band making three times what I am.

Compromise is part of life. You're in a cover band...you're going to have to play at least some songs you don't like if you want to make any kind of decent money. It's not like you're some well known original artist being forced to do a crummy song by your record label or something.

If nothing else, do the song, but suggest that the band do a song that YOU like in return.

I also think you're being a little extreme...it's not a great song, but there are far worse tunes out there.

Yes, I know and understand all of that. That is no problem. This is called a "rant" for a reason.

I don't care about money in this part of my life though.

We have a democratic methodology for picking our songs. That isn't a problem eiether. Doing this song isn't a problem because of that.

It doesn't change the fact that this song sucks- I don't see far worse than this. Like I said, this is the "Talk Dirty to Me" of this era.

I'd be playing hardcore if I could pull in a crowd. Being a musician is about being open to other types of music (Yes, even rap) even if you hate them.

There is something you can learn from every genre.

I agree with the OP. Play what you like, it sucks to play songs you dislike.

You could always throw down your bass, give the crowd the finger, and walk off stage when that song comes up in the set list. That'll show 'em!!!!!!!

If you don't care about the bank, do what you want to do. Hell, I've played to crowds of the other bands on the bill for years. Do I particularly care? At least I ain't whoring myself completely out.

If you're playing covers, and you're in a "democratic methodology," you're bitching to the wrong people. How many times have you played Mony Mony or some equally lame song (talk dirrrrrty to me etc...)?

If the song vacuums that much, tell the guys in your band that you're way too punk to do it.

my thoughts exactly...cover bands aren't in it for the art, they are in it for making money and/or having fun. its just one song, and although i agree it ranks high on the cheese meter, the crowd likes that song and probably wants to hear it.

Make them do "Crazy", by Patsy Cline. It's the #1 most requested song of all time. I almost walked off the stage when we were requested to do that song THREE TIMES in ONE SET! I can't stand that song, I think it totally sucks, makes me want to PUKE!!! I reduced my volume, borrowed a pick from the guitard, and commenced to doing Pete Towshend moves and headbanging, jumping around on the stage, etc., all while playing the CORRECT bassline. The bandleader caught my drift, so did the crowd. Of course, it helped that some rich bastage gave me a hundred-dollar bill after the set. He said he'd never laughed so hard at that song in his life!!

I know I will get flamed for this.

What's wrong with Talk Dirty To Me? Crazy Bitch rocks it's so 80's hair metal. I love it great beer drinking/dancing party tunes. I would much rather listen to songs about SEX, DRUGS and RNR than songs about how the world has wronged me for the umpteenth time.
I to play in a cover band and I also play songs I hate. I always say to my band members if we play Sweet Home Alabama one more time I am going to stick my head stock through your heart, yet it is the most requested song we play and some times we play it 2 times in a night. So do like I do suck it up put a smile on your face and rock it.

If you want artistic integrity, join an original band, there are plenty of pay to play gigs.

Cover bands are about selling drinks.

That said, I dig the tune. But, I play a ton of stuff I dislike, and have a BLAST doing it since the response is what matters.

I like the tune too. I just soooo catchy. I don't even recal it having verses... just a chorus. It's still way too catchy for it's own good.
