Rap/hip-hop you like

Sign in to disble this ad
Since I took up playing bass I pay more attention to the music "in" songs I listen to. I mainly listen to rock, punk and some metal but there is some rap I can get into or at least respect. I don't see many people talk about it on the board so I was wondering if anybody here listens to rap or hip-hop.

The Roots play there own instruments , Gangstarr , De la Soul , and A tribe called quest are pretty Jazz heavy in their samples or loops. Too Short and DJ Quick have many "real" instruments in their songs ; bass, piano/keys and drum kits.

Please list some that you like

I like pretty much all of the stuff you mentioned. Also some Atmosphere, Talib Kweli, and Tupac.
I hate corporate rap, but some of the more underground hip-hop/rap stuff is great.

OLD school stuff. Like Grandmaster Flash, and early Run DMC. Back when rap was fun, before it became all about drugs, gangs, and how those things are good. Ugh.

Rock on

For lyricism, check out stuff like Digable Planets or Jurassic 5, and for old-school beats you can't go wrong with the Pharcyde or People Under The Stairs.

Another one I like is Yesterday's New Quintet, live instrument jazz/hip-hop fusion, all by one guy, Madlib.

For other non-English stuff, MC Solaar (French) and Der Fantastichen Vier (German) are also pretty cool.

Good luck, there's tons of great hip-hop out there that's not commercial gansta rap, and it's definitely worth seeking out

that's because its a very controversial subject herer on TB. usually rap/hiphop threads degenerate into flaming contests.

i myself am a huge fan of Dr Dre's work and snoop's older work, as well as pre-commercialisation (c)rap. basically anything before the year 2000.

I enjoy Talib Kweli/Black Star, but sadly the only thing I've heard from the above is on Chapelle's Show

That older (fun) stuff is nice too, just not that much my style.
