Re-discovering

The story:

I went to specs music like I used to do before half.com. Long story short, two hours later, I "re-discover" Elton John. What an incredible singer/songwriter! I get chills repeatedly. I can't believe the genius and versatility. I also can't believe I ignored him for so long. Personally, he's not an artist that I really "want to like." Growing up with the Lion King soundtrack doesn't leave you with a "rock out" taste in your mouth.

The big idea:

Have you "re-discovered" anyone lately? How did it happen? What I really want to get talking about is venues for listening to new music beyond 30 second iTunes previews and with a little more personal touch than the internet in general.

I re-discovered Tool recently. Hadn't listened to any of their stuff in about 2 years, and didn't listen to 10,000 Days more than a couple of times before I gave up on it, thinking it was essentially Lateralus 2.

Then about a month ago when I was jamming with someone, we played something that was Tool-esque. I also spent some time at my girlfriends workplace and was talking to one of her co-workers about Tool. Both of those instances made me start listening to Tool again, and I can now appreciate 10,000 Days for what it is, a great record.

+1 - I rediscover them everytime I listen.

But (in sharp contrast), AC-DC, esp. the Bon Scott years. Not sophisticated like Steely Dan, but damn, Cliff plays a pretty solid foundation that lately has just been impressing me!

Another venue for re-appreciating is VH1 Classic albums:

Look at that list! Best of all, Netflicks has a number of them for rent.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Pacman: If you haven't already, listen to the "anthology" series. It's very intimate and all the "bad takes" really help me understand the creativity that was in the air.

I'm on a huge Pride and Glory kick right now. Haven't listened to them in years.
